Littleton, CO -  A sheriff’s deputy was killed and four others were wounded Sunday in a shooting in suburban Denver that capped a year of deadly attacks in the United States. Two civilians were also injured.

The shooting happened after deputies were called to the scene of a domestic disturbance in Highlands Ranch, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said on Twitter. The suspected gunman was also shot and is believed to be dead and “no longer a threat.”

Shots were fired in the course of the investigation at the Copper Canyon Apartments, a landscaped complex 16 miles (28 kilometers) south of Denver, the sheriff’s office said. Residents in the vicinity were advised to stay inside and avoid exterior walls and windows.

A hospital where three people were taken for treatment says those people suffered noncritical injuries. Another nearby hospital said it received four patients but wouldn’t release their conditions.

The shooting occurred on the final day of a year that saw the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history in Las Vegas.

well said. The second amendment should be abolished. Its silly.

But we do have to ask ourselves, now that the streets are overloaded with guns thanks to the wacky american obsession will it help to abolish the second amendment? Once the streets are loaded with guns is it perhaps safer to allow citzens that want to protect themselves against the nutties ot get guns too?

In other words the amendment is silly and retroactive had it never been in place we'd be better off. But now that it was around for so long whats the smartest way to stop the gun culture and killings?

Once again I have trouble understanding your educated comments, Archy. What does " nutties ot" mean?

He's saying that since there are so many guns out there it might be better to have even more. Yosher Koach because you need it. In Australia there was a massacre 20 years ago and all guns (except farmers and gangsters) had to be handed in to the government. Here gangsters only shoot other gangsters and farmers shoot wild animals with four legs. Mass shootings here are now unheard of.

I am saying that Australia never had an obsession with guns like the USA. In Austria which is also a smaller country it was easier to impose strict gun laws and collect it. In the USA if we abolished he silly amendment, guns would be like drugs. Is it hard to find illegal pot? Its every easy to get it anyhow. Prohbition didn't work either. Once people in a society are obsessed with something you can't stop them. I agree its a problem and i am anti guns but I think your Austrila analogy is bad.

Now guns will be in the street anyhow. If we abolish the ammendment only gangsters have guns. Now without abolishing it, perhaps gangsters or mass shooters perhaps can be stopped by other innocent civilians who have guns who would not have guns if we abolished the amendment since they are law abiding.

You do not seem to suggest anything practical.

In a practical sense, I'd say the smartest choice for the USA is to ban semi automatics which are harder to obtain anyhow. This way people can still have rifles to protect themsleves while ,limiting the real dangerous stuff. An outright ban while morally I agree with it, is just no practcial
