Brooklyn, NY - The NYPD is on the lookout for an unknown number of suspects in a string of attempted robberies that targeted Chasidic men in Crown Heights.

In each of the three separate instances which were reported within a 25 hour period, the victim was approached by a masked man who demanded money but left the scene empty handed.

The first incident took place at 7:38 PM on January 18th at the corner of Carroll Street and Albany Avenue.  Police said that the 25 year old victim managed to flee to safety after being approached by an unknown man holding a knife.

Both of the other two robbery attempts took place on Shabbos. Police said that a 32 year old man was approached at the corner of Schenectady Avenue and Carroll Street on January 19th at 7:15 PM by a masked man who told him to turn over his wallet.

The victim told the suspect that he did not have his wallet before turning around and walking away.  The third incident took place one hour later at the corner of Brooklyn Avenue and Crown Street. The 35 year old victim said that a knife-wielding man instructed him to turn over his money and then ran away.

The NYPD’s Hate Crimes Task Force is investigating the incidents as possible bias crimes because all of the victims were Chasidic. Police had no description of the suspect or suspects and said that they could not confirm that all three robbery attempts were committed by the same individual.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Crime Stoppers Hotline by phone at 800-577-TIPS, by text at 247637 (CRIMES) and then entering TIP577 or online at www.NYPDCrimeStoppers.com.
