Kiryas Joel, NY – After $10.5M of Grants for Mothers’ Center Village Seeks additional $2.25M of Federal Stimulus Funds

The grant request for the 55-bed center, known as Aishes Chayil D’Kiryas Joel, was included on a list of thousands of projects submitted to the state to claim a piece of the $787 billion package enacted in February.

There is no guarantee Kiryas Joel’s project is even eligible for funding through one of the stimulus programs. The list on which it appears is merely an unedited collection of requests the state has fielded.

A short description provided to the state indicates that Kiryas Joel wants to add 18 beds to Aishes Chayil, a three-story center where Orthodox Jewish mothers pay up to $185 a night to recuperate with their newborns before returning to their homes.

The proposal also calls for construction of a nursery and a “medical arts area.” The 50,000-square-foot building already has a nursery, but the village has yet to build the doctors’ offices that were in their plans from the outset.

Village Administrator Gedalye Szegedin, who is also the executive director of Aishes Chayil, didn’t return a call for comment.

Village officials estimated the project would cost $3.5 million when they began seeking grants in 2001. But the expense gradually ballooned to $11.4 million as the village secured one grant after another from allies in Albany and Washington to pay for the work.

Then-Gov. George Pataki and Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver were the project’s chief benefactors.

I am not Satmar or any Chusid.
The idea of a rest home of this type is brilliant. It will save untold monies and tragedies that result from medical problem that result from sub-standard care at home resulting in neglected babies, accidents and more. SIDS is a terrible thing. How about an exhausted mother sleeping in the bed with a baby and an accident happens, sometimes labeled SIDS.

Isn’t this a conflict of interest? Something doesn’t seem right.

    # 1 is correct. I never could understand why a hotel for new moms got grant money. I realize its great for a new mom to have a place to rest and relax, but everywhere outside of KJ, moms are kicked out of the hospital as soon as possible and rely on friends and family if they are lucky to have that support, or manage themselves — they don’t get a hotel funded with tax dollars. Isn’t KJ supposed to be just that type of community where neighbors and relatives help each other out?
I also wonder where the $185/night is coming from in a community that has the highest poverty and food stamp rates.

There are many handicapped children waiting for placement in group homes. Unfortunately the state froze the money that was supposed to be used to build the homes. I understand the need for a weeks of respite after a baby is born but how about the respite that parents of special needs children need? I am sure there are other very worthy projects that have lost their funding. They already have this kimpatorin home. That 2.5 million dollars could be better spent.

They can go to a hotel for $185/night. Shouldn’t the grants make it free or low cost. Someone is collecting at both ends. And the taxpayer is covering it.

it sounds like this place realy cost a lot less and the people got greedy when they saw the $$$ coming in. if they took public money (grants etc) they shouldn’t be aloud to charge $185 a night.

further… it sounds to me like these guys run a very profitable business, they have no vacancy and they charge alot. i don’t understand why the government is giving them money for such a project, it’s the equivilant of giving grants to a hotel in order for it to open up. it makes no sense.

Its so sad to see the commentts made here by other yiden….
My wife was just there for a week, what a beautiful place, they have doctors and nurses there all the time giving the mothers and newborns the best care possible,
Then they have heimeshe ladies helping out the mothers all day,and they serve 5 star meals 3 times a day,
I guess anyone saying that $180 a day should cover all their expences has never run any major operation in their life,
Please find me a hotel where you can check in that has doctors and nurses and maids and serve 5 star meals 3 times a day for this kind of money,

Just read today’s comments in “the local newspaper” from Orange County, and see what chilul hashem this is causing and what the goyish neighbors are saying about this.

And I thought the Satmar’s were so makpid on “hisgaros B’eimos” (not to enrage the gentiles.) but I guess that is only for Arabs. The white red necks from orange county have a different rule.

I dont understand the whole concept! We had 5 children ( one set of twins ) and my wife went home after 2 nights of being in the hospital. Yes she was tired, but she was extremely happy to be back in her OWN home surrounded by her other children and family. Why do all these women seem to not be able to handle “life”. Why doesnt their husband help out? where are their family? Are they that fragile that they cant do with a little lack of sleep? We all do it and get over it!

You all seem to be missing the point. Yes, it’s a wonderful place for a new mother to rest and relax. But the main issue is why does the rest of New York have to pay for your comfort? There’s no one denying you a permit for this luxury, so just go ahead and fund it yourself!

While it is important for new mothers to rest, where does the average American woman go to recuperate from childbirth? If the government pays for a Jewish rest home for new mothers, will they open up similar facilities for other mothers? If government money is involved, will the Jewish rest home have to accept non-Jews?
Usually if government is accepted, the program must be opened to all religions.

I love when some people just wright without thinkink $185 IS TO MUCH? if you just make some miner calculations you wil wonder how they survive . 55 beds x $185 x 7 days comes out to an income 65000 a week. Now they have to pay at least 21 registered nurses (3 8hour shifts of 7 nurses), two cooks, three meals for 55 mothers, reguler cleaning maintenance, building maintence, huge insurance, electric, gas, water, (maybe tax), a receptionist, and I can just go on forever. The mothers there don’t have to a thing there like making their beds ect. Everything is done for them all they do is eat (and there is food 24 hr), sleep, and YENTY around. so there is no way they cover themselves with $180 a day

10.5 mil is ridiculously high by any reckoning. I don’t envy them when their day of reckoning arrives, and all the pork will come to the surface. Stimulus, indeed. Porkulus sounds more like it.

The Satmar chassidim know how to do it. They dont have fancy degrees, go with nice ties or clean shaven faces. But they are able a tremendous amount of funding for all there projects.

The agudah is busy cutting back on everything when Satmar just keeps the money flowing.

A story happened with the Satmar Rav ZTL. Someone questioned Reb Yoel why the satmar boys arent going to college. The man ask “why shouldnt they go to college and become an accountant?” The rav answer let your boys go to college and become accountants….. this way they can count all the money my chassidim are busy making. I guess he had ruach hakodesh.

it all goes back to healthcare. years ago, you had a baby , they kept you in the hospital for a few days. nowadays they send you home too fast. you dont even have a chance to recuperate. thats why homes like this are needed.

“How about an exhausted mother sleeping in the bed with a baby and an accident happens, sometimes labeled SIDS.”

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (sometimes called Crib Death) does not occur from an “accident” like the mother rolling over on the baby. SIDS is a terrifying, unexplained phenomenon where a seemingly healthy baby just dies instantly while sleeping. My cousin’s child was nifter in this way, and 10 years later there is still no explanation.

Yes, tragic accidents happen, but that is not SIDS.

    Let me restate;
I am very familiar with SIDS and the percieved explanation for it. I am also familiar with tragic cases of accidental injury that are listed as SIDS, this might go on to avoid lifelong mental anguish to the parent when an accident happens.

just curious . does this org. have to run ads stating that it is open the public and is not discriminatory against race religion etc. I believe they have to if they are using grants and tax payer money just like schools must advertise this way in the news papers

Suggestion – Why dont they make such a place but not as grand as this one.
Everyone is entitled to some care after a baby but at $185 a night not everyone can afford.
I have been to other place similiar to this. Why do they need to serve salmon for Lunch ($4 a slice) when I would be very happy with a hearty soup and tuna sandwich. This home is a great idea but it is not affordable for everyone

kol hakavod for kj, evry village can choose to ask for a grant and they would most probably get it , the only diffrents do they care for their citizens as much as kj does. besides other cities spend their grants on such nobel projects as pregnancy prevention and drugs awareness and dont forget the most nobel cause of all the ENVIROMENT! like some endangered bug!! so stop whining all of u ur just a lil jealous!

(and of cause a bunch of jealousy people around earth. in just ten years a yiddishe mamma having a baby will have a hard time finding a place where to go, cause eveywere will be full. so let that big williamsburg rabbi open on for his chevra. hatzlocha rabah.

The $787 billion stimulous package is all ligitimate but for the $2.3 million requested by Jews for the sake of our future generations. A classic ‘Jew-hating-trap’ if ever there was one. Why do we Jews fall into their trap?
