According to the report (http://bit.ly/2G1WaPU), the median household income in New Square is $21,773, $38,968 less than the median household income in the state.

Kiryas Joel came in a close second to New Square, with median household incomes of almost $5,000 higher.

Only four towns on the state by state listing of poorest towns in the United States had median household incomes lower than New Square: South Tucson, Arizona, East Cleveland, Ohio, Brownsville, Florida and Ville Platte, Louisiana.

Poverty rates in the study were defined as an annual income of less than $25,100 per year for a family of four, with New Square’s 70 percent rate far surpassing Centerville, Illinois’s 50.1 percent poverty rate, the second highest in the nation.

New Square also had the highest rate of SNAP recipients in the country with 77.1 percent of the village’s residents relying on supplemental aid programs to feed their families.

According to the report, towns with a significant population of low income residents typically have relatively low housing prices. New Square was the exception to that rule, with median housing prices higher than that of the state average.

The report was based on data from the United States Census Bureau’s American Community Survey, with social and economic factors based on five year estimates for the period of 2012 through 2016.

Among the areas studied by the report were percentage of adults with high school and college diplomas, local poverty and SNAP recipient rates and median home values.

The crux of this overall issue is that our system teaches us its a norm to set yourself up to be poor and rely on govt subsidy. Then when needing more money, it’s only one small step away from improperly getting funds. Govt programs are designed for people who got stuck in life not for people who plan things so as to end up stuck. We need to switch our education approach to one where we train our own to all think and plan for success and then help out or use govt programs if life throws a curveball and you end up stuck.

I only know very “comfortable” people who live in new square and have beautiful homes. Full of luxuries… Very high living Standards! So maybe if they took their “low incomes” and put it towards necessities then they wouldn’t have to have every single govt. program that exists. They all live for free!

It is always sad to see families unable to support themselves who depend on others to feed their children.

#11 , Cricket says, “Govt programs are designed for people who got stuck in life not for people who plan things so as to end up stuck.”
And, #19 , responds, but leaves out the reason America has this Welfare system.
Liberalism & its main Party, Democrat, created massive redistribution of wealth, particularly in the 1930s & ’60s, which caused & continues causing generational poverty, for a permanent constituent base.
Liberals/Progressives have perpetuated the Big Evil Lie that Big Government redistribution of wealth to chosen groups is compassionate.
It’s the opposite & it’s bankrupted America, though that isn’t publicized enough.
America is approximately 270 trillion dollars in debt when considering all unfunded liabilities & balances on local, state, & federal levels.
This happened because the more governments came between us, the worse our financial situation became.
It’s simple. If I give 10 people a dollar each, they each receive a dollar. If I give a government worker (about 1 in 10 Americans is a govt. worker) $10 to give 10 people, they get about 25 or 30 cents each.
So, Liberals, who’s compassionate, supporters of no govt. welfare (The Constitution) or those supportive?
