Democratic City Councilman Rafael Espinal introduced a bill on Wednesday, saying restaurants should replace plastic with paper or metal straws.

Exceptions would be made for people with disabilities or medical conditions. The penalty would be a $100 fine.

The move comes as cities and nations begin to tackle the growing problem of plastic pollution.

Espinal says 500 million plastic straws are discarded each day in the U.S. and up to 12 million metric tons of plastic end up in the oceans each year.

Malibu, California, is banning all plastic cutlery and straws. Seattle and Miami Beach also have enacted bans on plastic straws.

Espinal doesn’t care, because he’s got a mental condition, so he’d be exempt.

Has anyone here ever listened to any of the debates on this subject? This was proposed in California a while ago, and there were numerous interviews in the media from the advocates of this. I found them quite interesting, and there needs to be a diagnosis somewhere in the psychiatric field for this pattern of thinking. The advocates have no way of attributing plastic straws as a source of the problem. What is not deniable is that there is a huge problem of plastic pollution, and that there is garbage everywhere that includes many materials, including plastic. Upon questioning the role of straws, the advocates cannot respond with logic, and they revert to pediatric or irrational retorts, such as, “You mean to say that there is no problem of plastic pollution?”

These imbeciles will not address the plastic containers that are not recycled, that are, by volume, many times greater than all the straws used. They will also not examine the recycle feasibility of these straws, even if it requires a reformulation in how they are manufactured. In CA, there is a consequence of 6 months in jail for a waiter offering a straw, plus a $1000 fine. This is getting bizarre, coming to NY!
