Rabbi Dubi Haiyun, who belongs to the Conservative Judaism movement, wrote on Facebook on Thursday that police woke him at 5:30 a.m. and took him in for questioning.

He says Haifa’s Orthodox rabbinical court “filed a complaint against me for performing weddings.”

Police said Haiyun was arrested after not heeding a summons. He was later released but the case wasn’t closed and he needs to appear before police on Monday.

Jewish weddings in Israel can only legally be performed by the Orthodox rabbinate, which other streams of Judaism consider an impingement on religious freedoms.

Opposition lawmakers denounced Haiyun’s arrest as a violation of religious freedom.

The official word is that he married off a mamzer to a regular Jew. Many people don’t believe in the system, and want secular marriages because of unfair halachos .If a child is born from a man who remarried without a get, or had an affair with a single woman, that isn’t a mazer. The rabbinate will not be able to enforce theocracy on secular people much longer .

“Many people don’t believe in the system, and want secular marriages because of unfair halachos.”

If people don’t believe in the system, that’s their problem. Doesn’t change halachos, and won’t force true Rabbonim (as opposed to this clown) to change them. If people use secular or non-Hallachic (i.e., conservative, reform, open orthodox, etc.) marriages, they are not married according to hallachah. While their offspring might not necessarily be mamzerim, there may be such problems in future generations, and their progeny might not be able to marry Jews (more likely those progeny will not be Jewish eventually, anyway).

“unfair halachos” is an oxymoron. Judaism is not negotiable.

ISRAEL is not america where you can do as you wish and make up a religion as you see fit It isn’t a pluralistic society and halacha can’t be defined as fair or unfair.

Maybe the people who got married by this Rabbi should look to see if they don’t have to get married again, they may not be really married and it is illegal.

break the law, suffer the consequences.
Park in a no park zone; pay the fine.
Hold up a store, spend time in jail.

But if you are a conservative rable and marry a mumzer, you expect that when you break the law every one should kiss your tuchass?

They would likely be deemed halachically married after they consummate the marriage even if a Catholic priest officiated since אין אדם עושה בעילתו בעילת זנות. They just won’t be properly registered if they need a get, and there won’t be enough oversight to ensure the bride didn’t need a prior get.
