He made the remarks on Sunday, during his weekly cabinet meeting, as the country marks the 45th anniversary of the Yom Kippur War.

“We absorbed a bloody attack that cost us thousands of victims,” Netanyahu said in his address. “We must do everything to prevent war. Its victims destroy the lives of families and they are a gaping wound in the heart of the nation. However, if war is forced upon us, we must do everything to win with minimal losses.”

Netanyahu explained that 45 years ago, the country’s intelligence erred, “holding by a mistaken assessment regarding the war intentions of Egypt and Syria.”

“When these intentions became clear beyond all doubt, and when the danger was on our very doorstep, the political leadership made a grievous mistake by not allowing a preemptive strike. We will never repeat this mistake,” the prime minister emphasized.

Following this remark, Netanyahu made it clear that Israel is constantly working to prevent its enemies from arming themselves with advanced weaponry.

“Our red lines are as sharp as ever and our determination to enforce them is stronger than ever.”

Netanyahu also addressed reports that the IDF was weighing up the possibility of allowing convicted terrorists to request a shortening of their sentences.

“I strongly oppose this. I know this is the position of the defense minister as well, and therefore it will not happen,” he added.

If it wasn’t for the 1973 massive airlift resupply effort (authorized by President Nixon), consisting of gigantic C5-A Galaxy cargo planes, and C-141 transports, which went on for several weeks, Israel would have definitely lost the Yom Kippur War. The resupply airlift brought Israel spare parts for planes, tanks, ammunition, howitzers, rockets, medical supplies, etc. Fighter jet aircraft were flown from Europe, and off the decks of carriers in the Mediterranean. Nixon stated “Give them everything that they need”. Even Golda Meir stated “For generations, all will be told of the immense planes from the United States, which meant life for our people.” Those planes were forced to fly a longer route to Israel from the state of Delaware through the Azores. The reason was because the cowardly European countries (the UK, France, Germany), were so afraid of being blackmailed by the Arabs, vis-a-vis withholding supplies of oil, that they refused to permit overflights.
