U.S. District Judge Valerie Caproni says in a written opinion Monday that the substance of Sheldon Silver’s appeal lacks merit.

She noted the 74-year-old Silver’s age and said the true purpose of his appeal is to postpone his day of reckoning. Silver is scheduled to report to prison Oct. 5.

Silver, a Democrat, was sentenced to 12 years in prison after his first conviction in 2015. That conviction was overturned after the U.S. Supreme Court redefined the boundaries of public corruption.

A second jury convicted him earlier this year. Prosecutors said he earned $5 million illegally.

He did it. He knew it was illegal. He did not do it to feed his family or for any reason beyond his own benefit. He needs to be in jail.

He’ll be out in less than 3 & he’ll probably serve it in a country club. It would be even more of a chilul Hashem if he got out ofgoing to jail. The whole episode is a shanda.

I’m very sorry to see him go to jail. I’m praying for a miracle that it should not happen. He helped hundreds of people in his community. There should be an outpour of sympathy for him.

To #10 - Silver did the crime; now, he will do the time. Age should not be an excuse. I remember, in 2004, there was a trial in Ft. Lauderdale, of a 69 year old, Jewish retired salesman from NYC, who became involved in an altercation with a 74 year old Jewish retired salesman from NYC. The 74 year old evidently became confused when he went to buy movie theater tickets, and didn’t hear how much the tickets cost. The rude wife of the 69 year old spoke down to the 74 year old in a nasty, and condescending manner, Naturally, the 74 year old was offended and yelled “OH, SHUTUP”. The 69 year old lost his cool, and punched the 74 year old, causing him to fall back, strike his head on the concrete pavement, causing a fatal injury. During his trial for second degree murder, there was holdout on the jury, who refused to convict the perpetrator, because of his age, resulting in a hung jury. The point that I’m making is that we should not feel sorry for Silver, because of his age. In Physics, we learned that for ever action, there is a reaction. Justice was served in this case; case closed!

To #16 - Spitting on the sidewalk or jaywalking is a minor crime. However, theft in office, corruption, bribery, and in the case of a Supreme Court nominee (assaulting a woman, for vile purposes), are not “minor crimes”. You don’t seem to know the difference, Archibold, between major and minor crimes. Perhaps, you need a lesson in civics. In addition, you could use a lesson, pertaining to how to construct basic English sentences, as well as using proper grammar, and spelling.
