The plan includes a payroll tax to raise more than a billion dollars and a taxi surcharge.
The payroll tax would be imposed on residents of the counties served by the MTA.

Paterson admits his proposal, which is believed to have opposition in the state legislature, isn’t perfect but says it would help avoid a fare hike and service cuts.

What would help is MTA employees pay for health insurance, at least a bit.

First things first. The MTA still hasn’t opened its books. We really don’t know whether they really need a rate hike.
It’s unheard of that a gov’t agency be allowed to not open its books. The whole thing smells!

this is just perfect and reflective of the new socialism that is overtaking this couuntry…if it can’t be paid by the people that use it, then lets make everyone else pay.

It looks like people will either start carpooling to work or walking if they live in the neighborhood. They can walk one-way and ride back the other just to save money. Plus you will also start to see people “Moving” — WHY — SHOULD every New Yorker be paying for somebody in Albany’s incompetence??? Let us not name names!! Let us also hope that VIN posts this!!!
