WASHINGTON — Sandra Day O’Connor, the first woman on the Supreme Court, announced her retirement Friday.
She said she expects to leave before the start of the court’s next term in October, or whenever the Senate confirms a successor. So far, there’s no word from the White House on who that successor might be.

In her letter, O’Connor said it has been “a great privilege” to serve on the court, and that she leaves with “enormous respect” for its role.
O’Connor, 75, said she will leave before the start of the court’s next term in October, or when the Senate confirms her successor. There was no immediate word from the White House on who might be nominated to replace O’Connor.
