New York, NY – New York City has reached its lowest rate of smoking on record (15.8%), with less than 1 million adult smokers in the City – 350,000 fewer than in 2002 — the Health Department announced today. With less than 72 hours left in New York City’s annual Nicotine Patch and Gum Program, New Yorkers who want to quit should act fast. The Nicotine Patch and Gum Program provides New Yorkers with nicotine replacement therapy at no-cost. Last year’s program prompted 30,000 New Yorkers to call 311 for help quitting smoking. The Nicotine Patch and Gum Program ends this Thursday, May 7.

NYC should be so proud. Before all you communist phonies start patting yourselves on the back, realize that nobody WANTED to quit smoking… they could not afford it anymore. The government violate people’s civil rights by imposing 300% taxes in order to FORCE people to change their lifestyle. Wow… how proud they must be. If only we could just tax everything that people don’t like… ya know… for their own good… we could be just like CUBA!

The European Communists will all send letters of congratulations I’m sure!

This press release is just the beginning of the Bloomberg mayoral canpaign.
Wait till he requires the heimish take out stores to post the calorie count of Cholent, Kishka and Kugel. Then we can blame Simcha Felder and Dov Hikind for supporting Bloomberg the tax maven.

The indian reservations sold a whopping 40 million cartons in NY last year who do you thing bought them? these stats are bogus they are just to show that the tobacco settlement money is being well spent. The fact is that only a tiny percent of that money went toward awareness and prevention the rest of the money cannot be accounted for!

Raise the tax to 10 $ a pack.

“Raise the tax to 10 $ a pack.”

$20 a pack in taxes would be even better. Once cigarettes are well over $1 each, very few people will smoke.

“What benefit does smoking provide to society?” Why does it need provide any benefit at all? It provides a benefit to the individual who chooses to smoke; what business is that of society’s?

“What reason is there to allow a behavior…” Stop right there. You don’t need a reason to ALLOW something, you need a reason to PREVENT it. It’s not up to you to “allow” something, as if we all need your permission before lifting a finger. You are not God, you do not own people, and you have no right to tell them what to do or not to do, unless you get that right from somewhere. Where do you get it, in this case?

“Very heavily taxing tobacco also helps the government raise plenty of money to partially offset the financial damage it incurs from smoking. It would be interesting if tobacco taxes are raised enough so they at least fully cover the costs to governments that are the result of smoking.”

What financial damage? What costs? Smoking causes governments NO damage and NO costs. On the contrary, it provides cheap revenue, as governments find smokers an easy target for unfair taxes. It would be interesting if tobacco taxes were lowered enough that they only covered DEMONSTRABLE costs that are the result of smoking, i.e. nothing at all.
