Washington – Virginia Congressman: Indecent Radio Ads Should Be Banned

    21

Washington – Representative Jim Moran (D-VA) has introduced a bill, H.R. 2175, which would prohibit Indecent ads from airing on broadcast TV and radio between 6 am and 10 pm. He believes the ads are indecent, have become “an intrusion into our daily lives,” and should be restricted to times when they are less likely to wreak havoc on American youth.

“some advertisements is an intrusion into our daily lives that I believe has become inappropriate.” Moran said in an interview with CNN. “There is a saturation of the television airwaves with these E.D. ads, and they have gotten more pervasive, more blunt, and less subtle.”

The bill currently has only one co-sponsor, Rep. Robert Brady, D-Pennsylvania, and there are currently no hearings scheduled on the issue. But a Moran spokesman said the congressman is actively seeking more support.

“I don’t want to be prudish about it,” Moran said. “I understand there is limitless market to deal with those products and its fine for drug companies to make a profit on that. The problem is that they are showing these ads when small children are bound to get curious.”

Nice to see there remain some decent politicians who are willing to stand up and voice their thoughts on this topic. Hasham Yaozor – Kol Hakovod.

A nice idea in theory, but it does beg the question of what, exactly, is considered “indecent?”

Ah, never mind… your edits made the article a bit incomprehensible, but by going to the original at CNN, I figured it out.

For some reasons there are no cosponsors on this bill, you know why? cuz this is part of the war against our freedom of speech and freedom of press.

if someone has a problem with indecent ads they have a choice of shutting the TV if the ads will be censored who knows what else will be censored. and besides children shows and family shows should not have these ads when young kids are watching. or better yet if you are having family time by watching maybe pull out a game or read a book with your kids. young children and teens will do a lot better in this way.

i dont know what other people do, but when i have my son in the car with me (or even when i am by myself) and something comes on that i dont want to hear, whether it be the news or an advertisement, i turn the radio off. simple as that. what offends me may not offend others, and what i do or dont want my children to be exposed to is my choice. i cant tell someone who didnt ask me what is right or wrong for their child.

The point is this. I listen to the radio during the day strictly for the traffic! When my kids are in the car, I have no choice but to travel blindly without this time saving info! Its very disheartening, but we do have a first amendment in this country. And one poster said even better! It’s not only the Bein Haprakim that is the problem! Most “news” stories today are unsuitable for small ears!

This Congressman Moran is a MORON and an Anti-Semite. He should be booted out of congress!

Here is an excerpt about this MORON from Wikipedia:

Prior to the 2003 invasion of Iraq he told an antiwar audience in Reston, Virginia on March 3, 2003, that “If it were not for the strong support of the Jewish community for this war with Iraq, we would not be doing this. The leaders of the Jewish community are influential enough that they could change the direction of where this is going, and I think they should.”[6][7]

Moran said that his comments were taken out of context, and he had said the same about the Catholic Church and Southern Baptist Convention at three antiwar forums.[8][9]

The National Jewish Democratic Council criticized Moran’s comments.[10] Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle said Moran’s comments were “unfounded, baseless, and way out of line.” House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi said Moran’s comments have “no place in the Democratic Party.” Joe Lieberman called the comments “deeply offensive and morally wrong.”[6]

Writing in the December 22, 2003 edition of The Nation, Letty Cottin Pogrebin charged that “Representative James Moran of Virginia stirred up another incendiary canard — Jewish influence — by attributing America’s war with Iraq to ‘the strong support of the Jewish community.'”[11] According to a Gallup Poll, the vast majority of Jewish Americans oppose the war, even the minority of Republican Jews. Jewish American opposition to the war has been consistent even before the invasion, and they have been more strongly opposed to the war than any other major religious group.[12]

According to an article about Moran by Alexander Cockburn in The Nation,[13] reporters like Robert Kaiser in the Washington Post have described the neoconservative lobby that supported the Iraq war, which includes such prominent Jewish neocons as Richard Perle, Paul Wolfowitz, and Douglas Feith; The Forward reported that Jewish groups, such as Workmen’s Circle, were angry at the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations for supporting the war; and the American Jewish Congress supported the war.

In 2004 Moran for the first time faced a Democratic primary challenger, Andy Rosenberg. 58.5 percent of the district voted for Moran versus 41.5 percent for Rosenberg. Moran went on to be reelected to the U.S. Congress in the general election for his eighth term.

In September 2007, Moran again angered Jewish organizations. In an interview with Tikkun,[14] Moran said, “Jewish Americans, as a voting bloc and as an influence on American foreign policy, are overwhelmingly opposed to the war,” more than any other ethnic group. “But AIPAC is the most powerful lobby and has pushed this war from the beginning. I don’t think they represent the mainstream of American Jewish thinking at all, but because they are so well organized, and their members are extraordinarily powerful — most of them are quite wealthy — they have been able to exert power. The reason I don’t hesitate to speak out about AIPAC’s influence — notwithstanding the fact that I’ll be accused of being anti-Semitic every time I suggest it — is that I don’t think AIPAC represents the mainstream of American Jewish thinking.[15][16] The National Jewish Democratic Council responded “Rep. Moran’s comments are not only incorrect and irresponsible – they are downright dangerous.”[17] The Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Washington complained that “[Moran] uses clearly anti-Semitic images such as Jewish control of the media and wealthy Jews using their wealth to control policy.”[16]

OR, a parent could actually be a responsible parent and CHOOSE to NOT ALLOW their children to LISTEN to the RADIO or WATCH television! Why does it have to become something that becomes illegal or against school rules before people use their own brains?????????

Today this little saint wants to ban ads for ED because in his opinion (and mine) they are indecent.

Tomorrow he or another law-maker may decide the same about Adam & Eve and half the Old Testament.

This is the top of a very steep and slippery slope.

The is already device built into every radio and television and computer that allows parents to control the influences to which their children are exposed but reading this article it is obvious that the sponsor and many other parents are either not up to date about modern electronic communication equipment or are simply afraid to exercise control using the already available technology.

I don’t know of a single radio, television, radio, PC or other device manafactured anywhere in the world that does not have a parental control switch.

The secret switch is never marked accuratly in order to keep youngsters from knowing the true purpose of the switch and the trick seems to have worked so well that now even the adults don’t remember its true purpose.

You may need to search for it but every device has a switch marked Offensive Filth Fiter.

    go for it, Moran

You’re all wrong when you call this censorship. It’s not. It’s called DECENCY STANDARDS, what you had years ago when it would have been unthinkable for such things to be aired on public airwaves! I grew up in a a time when you didn’t have to be afraid to leave a child alone with a tv or radio. What’s wrong with reigning in the out of control filth that keeps spewing, and it keeps getting progressively worse, and more and more explicit. I keep turning the radio off ( I have no tv) constantly, and I’m alone in the house, because it just DISGUSTING.
