30 year old Manuel Almonte was arrested by police on Wednesday afternoon and charged with attempted rape, burglary, sex abuse, forcible touching, assault and harassment.

Police said that the attack took place in the vicinity of South 2nd and Havemeyer Streets, just yards from Almonte’s South 3rd Street apartment.

The incident took place at approximately 5:30 PM on January 1st.

The 26 year old victim, who was not a member of Williamsburg’s Chasidic community, was on a first floor landing in the building when she was punched in the back of the head by her attacker, who got on top of her and attempted to remove some of her clothing. The unidentified victim fought back against her attacker who fled the scene towards Marcy Avenue.

The NYPD released photo and video of the suspect just hours after the attack, hoping to identify the suspect.

Almonte surrendered to police today, accompanied by family members.

A sad story, even with the happy ending of an arrest.
