News 12 (http://bit.ly/2QkJ8Cn) reported that Tommy Starro, a volunteer with both the Maybrook Fire Department and the Town of Montgomery Ambulance Corps, was already being scrutinized for disparaging remarks allegedly made about Orange County legislator Kevin Lujan and his mother, when the anti-Chasidic posts came to light. Starro is listed as a deputy chief on the Maybrook Fire Department’s website.

A Facebook post referencing a Chasidic development in Chester reportedly drew a response from Starro saying, “Stand strong chester. Don’t give them what they want. You dont want your town crowed with measel infested skells.”

A skell is defined as a tramp or a homeless person by the Oxford Dictionary, with slang references adding further derogatory connotations to the word.

Another post that reportedly appeared on Starro’s Facebook wall showed three Chasidic men standing in the middle of an intersection beneath several traffic lights and referenced the Mario Brothers video games where players earn rewards by collecting coins.

In its report, News 12 blocked out two words of the post which read, “Only in (blocked-out obscenity) Chester NY. These (illegible) bricks are just standing in the middle of kings highway and 17M under the light. I’ll give a prize if someone takes them out like mario brothers and the coins.”

Starro reportedly told News 12 that his Facebook account had been hacked.

Longtime friend Joseph Byrne said that Starro has a reputation as a jokester and that those remarks were not consistent with the Starro he knows.

Byrne also vouched for Starro’s dedication to his volunteer positions saying, “When that pager goes off, he is the type of guy that will, that will leave his family no matter what time it is in order to answer that call. He doesn’t care who it is.”

The social media posts in question have been removed and Starro was asked to remove his affiliations with both the Maybrook Fire Department and the Town of Montgomery Ambulance Corps from his Facebook page.

Neither department was immediately available to comment on the matter but News 12 reported that Starro could be facing disciplinary actions because of his posts.

Starro first found himself in the media spotlight on December 28th for the remarks he and another man allegedly made about Lujan.

Starro changed his profile picture later that day to a meme showing a picture of two characters from a 1970s sitcom who often disagreed violently, bearing the words, “To the good old days, when we could make fun of each other without everyone getting their panties in a bunch.”
