    Mogilev, Belarus shulBelarus – The Jewish community of Mogilev is set to reconstruct its historic synagogue after Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko approved the transfer of the building, which was seized by Soviet authorities decades ago and used as a pumping station on the Dnieper River.

    Lukashenko’s decision follows a six-year effort by Jewish community chairman Eli Genilis, who enlisted the early support of City Councilman Victor Shorikov.

    Led by Chabad-Lubavitch Rabbi Menachem Alperowtiz, the city’s chief rabbi, Mogilev’s Jewish community has launched a campaign to fund the reconstruction effort. …
