Washington – Law enforcement officials became so concerned by President Donald Trump’s behavior in the days after he fired FBI Director James Comey that they began investigating whether he had been working for Russia against U.S. interests, The New York Times reported.

The report Friday cites unnamed former law enforcement officials and others familiar with the investigation.
The inquiry forced counterintelligence investigators to evaluate whether Trump was a potential threat to national security, and they also sought to determine whether Trump was deliberately working for Russia or had unintentionally been influenced by Moscow.
The Times reports that FBI agents and some top officials became suspicious of Trump’s ties to Russia during the 2016 presidential campaign but didn’t launch an investigation at that time because they weren’t sure how to approach such a sensitive and important probe, according to the sources. But Trump’s behavior in the days around Comey’s May 2017 firing, specifically two instances in which he seemed to tie Comey’s ousting to the Russia investigation, helped trigger the counterintelligence part of the investigation, according to the newspaper.
Trump tweeted early Saturday that the report showed that the FBI leadership “opened up an investigation on me, for no reason & with no proof” after he had fired Comey.
Robert Mueller took over the investigation when he was appointed special counsel soon after Comey’s firing. The overall investigation is looking into Russian election interference and whether Trump’s campaign coordinated with the Russians. The Times says it’s unclear whether Mueller is still pursuing the counterintelligence angle.
Trump’s lawyer Rudy Giuliani told the Times that he had no knowledge of the inquiry but said that since it was opened a year and a half ago and they hadn’t heard anything, apparently “they found nothing.” Trump has also repeatedly and vociferously denied collusion with the Russians.

Based on some of the things Trump was saying, the FBI had to open an investigation. The use of Trump Tower by Russians to launder money and Trump’s desire to repeal the Magnitzky Act along with his failure to condemn the invasion of Ukraine was enough without the subsequent disclosures of his attempts to build in Moscow and his veneration of Putin. Trump also shared Israeli intelligence with Putin, an ally of Iran and Syria.
Doesn’t mean FBI believed there was a real concern. His words raised red flags. Doesn’t sound like the investigation lasted too long.
As it was reported way back when it was Rosenstein who approved the firing, so why wasn’t Rosenstein investigated? Seems like more evidence of a “deep state” insurrection.

Some of the pro Drumpf commentary above is rather confused. They accuse the NY Times of Fake News and the FBI of being out to get Trump. It can only be one or the other, the two are mutually exculsive. If NY Times report is fake the FBI did nothing and if the FBI is “guilty” of targeting Drumpf then the story is true. Whatever Russian chose Donald as a candidate who could actually accomplish something to benefit Russia, over estimated his abilities. By now that bureaucrat is probably in a gulag in Siberia doing hard labor. Tiny Trump, with his phony Time magazine cover is a joke.
