Brooklyn, NY – In a strongly worded statement issued after a social media video showed local residents harassing a tow truck driver and freeing a car about to be towed, the NYPD has said it will have zero tolerance for anyone who abuses any of its traffic agents.

According to reports in The Daily News (https://nydn.us/2QIVGn8), the incident took place at the corner of 44th Street and 15th Avenue on Thursday after an NYPD traffic agent hooked a minivan up to his tow truck and began filling out the paperwork on the vehicle.

A group of passersby managed to detach the car from the tow truck, and video posted to social media shows the grey Honda Odyssey pulling away from the truck’s tow bars, with onlookers encouraging an unknown driver to quickly leave the scene.

The video shows the traffic agent disgustedly taking some of his equipment back from a Chasidic man who had removed it from the top of the minivan, and then being intercepted by two more men as he placed his hand on the driver’s side door of the vehicle, ostensibly to prevent him from leaving, the driver speeding away as soon as traffic cleared.

Sources told VIN News that the car was parked near a fire hydrant and had not allowed the15 foot clearance of the hydrant as required by law.

The New York Post (https://nyp.st/2QFVDbH) reported that the person who drove the car away was a member of Shomrim and not the owner of the vehicle. A spokesperson for Shomrim told VIN News that Shomrim had nothing to do with the incident.

Voices can be heard on the video laughing and making negative comments to the traffic agent as he returned to his vehicle, one repeatedly saying “what a loser” while another intoned, “you are going to lose your job for acting like an (obscenity).”

Other comments had a racial overtone, with one man saying to the African American traffic agent, “You work in the wrong precinct. You should work in Harlem. They’ll kill him over there.”

The NYPD said that it had increased patrols in the area in response to requests from community leaders who said that illegally parked vehicles were creating traffic, hindering both area residents and emergency vehicles.

A statement issued by the NYPD read “We will not tolerate out traffic agents being subject to abuse in any form, not the least of which is the ugly example we see in this video… This is disgusting behavior against an officer who was doing his job to keep New Yorkers safe while exhibiting restraint and professionalism.”

According to News 12, a license plate check revealed a list of more then $1,000 in parking violations issued to the vehicle.

The NYPD said that it could not comment further on the incident at this time, but sources told VIN News that an arrest is expected within the next few days.

How about when they towed my car twice from a legal spot because the guy was too dumb to read the sign and I have to pay to pick it up from the Navy Yard?

Certainly thuggery that ought to be suppressed by the police. People in BP complain about traffic problems. When the authorities do something they are attacked by the same people.

These so called “frum” people block fire hydrants, block driveways, double and triple park, drive through red lights, fail to yield the right of way to pedestrians, drive over solid yellow lines, and speed and drive recklessly. Yet, they have the gall to harass a tow truck operator, who was legally performing his duties. The owner of the car, whom owes $1,000.00 for parking violations, should have his registration suspended, and should receive a hefty fine.

Back in my country you could be locked up for up to 10 years for assaulting an officer or interfering with a police matter.

What disturbs me is that these ticket officers run around like a bunch of mice every Erev Shabbos and Erev Yom Tov knowing good and well that there is a true lack of parking just to cash in on the jewish community’s chesbon. While in other areas they are not seen anywhere when they have their Yom Tov.

Having a Ballance of 1,000.00 in parking violations for a vehicle that is mostly around the NYC area, is not uncommon at all! So what’s everyone freaking out about? And 15 ft clearance for a fire hydrant? Used to be around 5 ft in the 80’s and 90’s. Those money grubbing Democrat low life lawmakers, made it so much more difficult to park, on top of an already difficult situation. Mamzeirim.

To Liepa (#20)- If you would read the posting by Balaboos (#17), you would see that he agrees with me, 100%. What I wrote about in my posting (#8), is not just an occasional instance in Borough Park, or elsewhere. It goes on all the time; according to Halacha, one is mandated to obey the laws of the country which they live in. The latter also applies to traffic and parking laws! When I last drove through Borough Park a few years ago, I was shocked to see the driving antics in that community, which appears to be worse today. It is not much better in Flatbush, either.

To Paul in Saudi Arabia- You finally admitted that Saudi Arabia is “your country”, and not the USA. The cops in your country, especially the so-called religious police follow citizens, to see if they are dressed properly, etc.

I hate to say it, but if I were mayor, I would start making examples of people and hit back hard. This is disgusting behaviour.

How people can look at disgusting behavior like this and the start spouting bullshit about who voted for whom is beyond stupid. The fact is that this is a tremendous chilul hashem and anyone with a shred of decency let alone yiddin should be condemning this behavior. With stories like this and stories of the Frum going to prison for business crimes it’s no wonder the world has a problem with even kids who grow up in Frum homes going off the derech. You see stories like this you wonder why bother with religion. Stop making everything a Hillary Trump thing.

My son parked his brothers car at a NO standing zone. He got a $ 115 ticket which he probably deserved. Also his car was Booted. He went up to his apartment to get a credit card to call in his payment ,when he came downstairs he was already hooked on tow truck which cost him additional $ 180
So all together $475.00 for being in a NO standing zone, so then we all wonder why citizens get so upset when you see a car ticketed and towed

To Archy- I lived in Borough Park for five years, a long time ago (1516 42nd St). I have found memories of going with my Grandfather to a fish store on 13th Avenue, where I would see a large fish swimming in a tank. I also have fond memories of my Father taking me for a drive in his old Chevrolet (which had a running board). He attached a toy steering wheel, to the dashboard, and I would pretend to drive the car, while he was driving. My other Grandfather lived on 42nd St., between 14th and 15th Ave. My Aunt lived across the street. When I went back to visit the old neighborhood ten years ago, I couldn’t even get out of my car, since there was no place to park. It was extremely stressful to drive in Borough Park, because of the reckless drivers. Last, I have nothing but contempt for drivers who block or park too close to fire hydrants. The Fire Department needs 15 feet clearance, in order to attach their fire hoses, in the event of a fire. Selfish, law breaking motorists block fire hydrants, as well as driveways. Don’t give me that b.s. excuse about having hectic lives and large families. We all must obey traffic laws; otherwise, people should not drive, or own
    cars.

I watched the video of the event. Such foul mouths belonged to the Jews, while the goy was so well-behaved.

Is this any way for nice Jewish men (Chassidim) to act, towards a city employee trying to do his job? If this had occurred in Israel, the cops would not have been so nice, and scores of arrests would have been made.

Here is a crazy, but 100% valid idea.
A Kol Koreh from the Rabbonim in Boro Park.
Encourage ride sharing and shitufim for cars.
Anybody that thinks that they need a car, needs a heter from the ‘Vaad of Car Ownership’. The heter includes specifications of dimmensions.
Cars have become status symbols in the Charedi commenity. Not good.
Expensive cars are a waste of money. Not good. HaShem yisburach gave you the brucha of disposable income, who said you should waste it. Mosdos and Chesed orgs go unfunded while some members of the kehilla live like kings. Very wrong.
Has anybody acquiring an Escalade every asked their Rebbe if it is a good thing? Probably not.
Less cars on the road, less problems.
More people walking = safer streets and healthier men.
The RSO created this tzoras for us to learn something. Think about it.

Embarrassing – these kinds of people make all chasidic people look bad, besides for the fact that the cop is correct. If you have an issue go to court you don’t act like a Vald chazir from the Congo!
    Sad!

You got to love it how there are those that posted on here, saying that this traffic agent is just doing his job. Just doing his job?? These ticketing agents aka low lives gloat in the misery of others. Trash is what they are. Not excusing the behavior of the chasidim either but when you hurt/mess with someone’s private property and schedule and livelihood, expect for there to be a backlash! There could s a special place in hell for these mean spirited reshuim. Nuff said!!

To: #62 - There should be no mercy shown to those who block fire hydrants, and endanger other Chassidim (including children), in the event of a fire. What chutzpah those low life residents had in harassing the tow truck operator, and using racial slurs. If you have a problem, take it up in court. Otherwise, don’t violate traffic and parking laws. Incidentally, that mob showed no derech eretz.

There’s no doubt that the NYPD targets jewish areas by far, especially Erev Shabbos and Erev Yom Tov. Drive around in other neighborhoods (during busy holiday times)and you’ll see it for yourself.
