Gabbard said in a CNN interview slated to air Saturday night that she will be formally announcing her candidacy within the next week.

The 37-year-old Iraq War veteran is the first Hindu elected to Congress and the first member born in the U.S. territory of American Samoa. She has visited early primary and caucus states New Hampshire and Iowa in recent months and has written a memoir that’s due to be published in May.

Gabbard is joining what is expected to be a crowded Democratic field. Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts has already formed an exploratory committee and is moving quickly with trips across early primary states. California Sen. Kamala Harris, New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders are all weighing their own presidential bids and are expected to announce decisions in the upcoming weeks. Former Obama administration housing chief Julian Castro plans to announce his run for the presidency on Saturday.

Gabbard’s run would not be without controversy. In 2016, she alarmed fellow Democrats when she met with Donald Trump during his transition to president and later when she took a secret trip to Syria and met with President Bashar Assad, who has been accused of war crimes and genocide. She questioned whether he was responsible for a chemical attack on civilians that killed dozens and led the U.S. to attack a Syrian air base.

She said she doesn’t regret the trip and considers it important to meet with adversaries if “you are serious about pursuing peace.” She also noted that the 2003 invasion of Iraq was based on faulty intelligence and said that she wanted to understand the evidence of the Syria attack.

Gabbard was one of the most prominent lawmakers to back Sanders over Hillary Clinton in the 2016 Democratic presidential primary. Her endorsement came in dramatic fashion, with her resigning as a vice chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee to express her support.

Asked last year whether she would still consider running if Sanders ran, Gabbard said Sanders is a friend and she didn’t know what his plans were.

“I’m thinking through how I can best be of service and I’ll make my decision based on that,” she said.

Gabbers has a history of slamming Israel.

In May, Gabbard took to Twitter to criticize Israel following the riots along the Gaza fence on May 14.

“Israel needs to stop using live ammunition in its response to unarmed protesters in Gaza. It has resulted in over 50 dead and thousands seriously wounded,” she tweeted.

Following Netanyahu’s controversial address to Congress in March 2015 against the Iranian nuclear deal, Gabbard issued a statement saying, “It’s unfortunate that an issue as important as preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons has been muddled by partisan politics. This is an extremely serious issue, at a critical juncture, that should not be used as a political football.”

The United States’ relationship with Israel, she said, “must rise above the political fray, as America continues to stand with Israel as her strongest ally.”

And in January 2017, Gabbard – a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee – issued a statement explaining why she voted against a House resolution condemning the UN Security Council resolution, which harshly slammed Israel’s settlement policies, and the failure of the US to block that resolution.

“I know how important our enduring alliance with Israel is,” she wrote. “My vote upholds my commitment to maintaining and strengthening this alliance, as well as my long-held position that the most viable path to peace between Israel and Palestine can be found through both sides negotiating a two-state solution. While I remain concerned about aspects of the UN resolution, I share the Obama administration’s reservation about the harmful impact Israeli settlement activity has on the prospects for peace.”

What took her so long ???

I don’t think that she is against Israel per se; many Israelis have criticized the use of live ammunition, against civilians in Gaza, as not all of them are terrorists (i.e. women and small children).

Soros will be cutting her a check sooner than you can say Allah Akbar.

A 37 year old with 5 years in Congress is not likely to make the cut after the first couple of primaries. Why wouldn’t someone like that have a little patience and wait until she gains maturity and experience. Even I know a lot more now than I did at 37.

The democrat primaries are going to feature candidates who are each more anti Israel than the other, in their bid for the progressive anti Israel Bernie voters they will continuously attack israel for defending themselves. They will also each be more anti religious freedom than the other calling for religious people who object to catering gay weddings to be persecuted.

Another double-talker. Pro Israel…….until Israel defends itself from primitive savages. Then she laments the use of force by Israel. Want to see what a phony is? what about these examples: Liberal politicians are against the wall, but have doors with locks on their homes. There are against guns, but are protected by armed body guards. They are concerned about global warming, but take private jets if they travel somewhere. I am tired of it. But Americans have short memories. So many people swallow the bait, hook line and sinker. Nothing changes.
