Munich, Germany – Lawyer: Detention of Demjanjuk is ‘Inhumane’

Munich, Germany – A lawyer representing John Demjanjuk, the Ukrainian-born man accused of herding Jews to the gas chambers in a Nazi death camp, said today the pre-trial detention of his client, 89, in Germany was “inhumane.”

In comments to appear Monday in the newspaper Tagesspiegel, Ulrich Busch said he met with Demjanjuk for five hours on Saturday in Munich’s Stadelheim Prison and concluded he was suffering psychologically.

“His detention is a breach of our constitution and of human dignity,” said Busch.

He said Demjanjuk was outwardly robust, but the prosecution was wearing him down psychologically by virtue of having him back in prison after 30 years of resisting charges.

Busch and another lawyer have applied for bail for Demjanjuk.

Demjanjuk was delivered to Munich from the United States on Tuesday to answer accessory-to-murders charges that he worked at Sobibor death camp in Poland as an auxiliary, or guard employed by the SS, during 1943 in a period where 29,000 Jews were killed.

Demjanjuk, who lived in Germany from 1945 to 1952, has not been indicted yet, but prosecutors say a trial may begin within weeks.

The Sobibor camp commandant, Franz Stangl, was jailed for life in 1970 in Germany and died in prison. A German court had tried 11 other Sobibor SS guards in 1965-66, imprisoning six, one for life. One committed suicide during his trial.

his lawyers are using desperate tactictics of diversion.. rather than defending a murderer and savage (which they know they cannot) they are attacking the “system” and prosecutors.in effect trying to put the german court system on trial….we can not let that happen…the focus is and must continue to be exposing the truth regarding this subhuman animal called demjanjuk…we can never extract justice from him for the crimes he commited, i will leave that to God Almighty….we need to expose him, shame him and his supporters, and let no one ever forget or even question the atrocities perpetrated by these vicious subhuman animals… we have to hear it again completely in all its minutiae and gory detail and tell it to the world ..

hmm, if he isn’t dealing well with prison then let’s hold him in one of the gas chambers. Of course we will fill it with hundreds of mannequins (or former nazis) so he can’t move around and keep the lights off and the door closed. Then we can see how many hours he will last.

Let his last days on earth be as terrible as the death of his 29,000 victims!

    Never again!

we are acting humane by giving him a trial to defend himself, unlike how he treated 29,000 innocent people at sobibor.

i hope demjanjuk is found guilty and hung from a tree.
