Ramapo, NY – Two separate cases – one involving a cow and the other involving chickens – that represent ongoing tensions within the community between religious practices and zoning rules, were heard in town court today.

In the first case, the owners of a yeshiva where a cow was slaughtered in the backyard earlier this month asked for more time to answer charges that they violated town zoning regulations.
In the second case, the organizer of a religious ceremony held last fall that involved 13,000 live chickens that were slaughtered in a Monsey parking lot, asked to withdraw a guilty plea to violating zoning codes and instead have a trial on the charges.
Town Justice Rhoda F. Schoenberger granted both requests.
“People are obviously free to practice their religion,” Ramapo Town Attorney Michael Klein said after both cases were heard in court. “But slaughtering live animals on one’s property extends far beyond what the law would permit.”
The story is misleading, and the headline is outright false. The Bobov case had nothing to do with the cow, and if you read the story carefully this becomes clear, but it’s deliberately phrased to give the opposite impression.
It’s like saying “Mr John Smith, who last week was accused last week of molesting children, was convicted this morning in traffic court”. Not stated is that he was convicted of parking illegally, and that the molestation remains an unfounded accusation.
These reports sounds more like “Der Speigel” in Germany before WWll.
where is that law

Why can’t we just stick to the law? If you need a permit, just get a permit.
Sorry, folks, but even as a frum Yid, I wouldn’t want to look out my window and see a cow slaughtered next door. I also would not want a Yeshiva or any public building in my residential neighborhood. The people in Ramapo may be anti Semitic or anti frum, but their greivances are valid, nonetheless!
I dont think anyone who buys a house in a nice erea would wanna wake up one day and see a cow hanging froma tree, or wake up another day to the screams of a bunch of stinking chickens. if u wanna shect a cow do it in a slaughter house. I an yeshiva or org. wanna have chickens before Yom Kippur do it at a local butcher shop or get a permit. You cant take residential areas and turn into a buther shop. Yoy wouldnt wanna see a bunch of pigs being slaughtered in front of your house
