Washington – President Obama announced today sweeping new fuel efficiency and emissions standards that will increase the sticker cost of cars by $1,300 by 2016.

“It costs money to develop these vehicles, but even as the price to build these cars and trucks goes up, the cost of driving these vehicles will go down, as drivers save money at the pump,” Obama said.

Under the new standards, cars will get an average of 35.5 mpg by 2016 and have a fuel economy gain averaging more than 5% a year. The new standards surpass the law passed by Congress in 2007 requiring an average fuel economy of 35 mpg by 2020.

“If you buy a car, your investment in a more fuel-efficient vehicle as a result of this standard will pay off in just three years,” Obama calculated.

“So this is a winning proposition for folks looking to buy a car. In fact, over the life of a vehicle, the typical driver would save about $2,800 by getting better gas mileage.”

To cut the deal, Obama brought together carmakers, auto unions, the federal government, environmentalists and the leaders of states like California and Massachusetts, which already have adopted strict auto emissions and mileage standards.

Fifteen states representing 40% of the cars on the road today already had set the new nationwide standards announced by Obama.

“You’ve got to give (Obama) credit, because very quietly he had everyone negotiate and everyone stayed quiet, and things moved forward,” said Calkfornoa Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who added the last four administrations were unable to accomplish anything close to Obama’s deal.

What’s left of the U.S. auto industry also seems to be onboard the Obama plan.
“This was just a perfect time for the administration to pull all the parties together,” added Ford CEO Allan Mulally.

this headline is very misleading. The article states that in fact this will save the average american $2,800 by getting better gas mileage
every jew should applaud this. This is an important step in ending our dependence on foreign oil from enemies of the jews like saudi, iran, gulf states, russia, venezula etc

This is a small price to pay for cleaner air and less dependence on the Arabs for imported oil….we have heard all the stupid reasons for opposing more fuel-efficient cars (e.g. frume yiddeshe families with many children need big cars) but none of them warrant continuation of the current gas guzzelers.

I just do not believe these numbers. It will cost a whole lot more. Why haven’t the auto makers done this before? Because it is a scam just like ethanol. Build a better more efficient car and people will buy it. Let the government set rules and we get USSR style or a Medicaid fiasco.

wasn;t it bloomberg who said dont use so much electric, go green, now CONED wants to raise prices on electric becuase they are not pulling in enough money. same with the (DEP) water. now the same will be with gas by 2016. Gas will go up and stay up, the people with the old cars will suffer

There is technology out there that one can run a car on just water – yes, ordinary H2O. BUT, it is being suppressed by the oil cartel and car manufacturers and the gov’t. for obvious reasons. You can find websites that give this information.

Obama’s push for “plug-in hybrids” is a step in the right direction.

It would be even better (security wise, oil independence-wise etc.) if Obama would endorse Shai Aggasi from Better Place electric car plan (or the like) which is going into effect as we speak in Israel, Denmark, Australia, San-Francisco, Hawaii, and Ontario.

Better Place is an electric car “enabler”. Better Place doesn’t build electric cars. What they do build is the INFRASTRUCTURE the *enables* electric car to be AS convenient as your regular gasoline car.

Shai Agassi’s mission is to get us off Arab oil. To rid the world of its Arab oil addiction. And his company has incredible momentum. He made it into Time’s “Top 100 most influential People”’s list. (If you’ve never heard of his company, you should definitely check it out. It is the next big thing in transportation technology.)

It would be nice if the US wakes up to the fact that most of its problems (and wars) are based on Arab oil dependence. Iraq War etc.
Skip the hybrid and plug-in hybrids. They are just a stepping stone to pure electric *oil free* vehicles.

Outside experts are estimating that the new standards will cost far, far more than the $1,300 the administration is claiming. The auto companies are afraid to complain because the government has them by the throat right now. What a farce!

People we must keep in mind that 1)all recent gov estimates were much lower than end result. And 2) this is before any inflationary calculation considered!

    This is very bad.
Does anyone remember when the car manufactures were forced to make smaller cars and no one bought them so they started making bigger cars again? People want a choice of cars. If I want to drive a minivan thats MY choice. We used to have choices here BO (Before Obama). Of course the car company heads are praising the Obama. He will fire them!

This is a joke. It wont save anything. He wants to stop dependence on foreign oil??? Well we should be drilling in our own land! What kind of country doesnt make use of its own resources?

So what happens when we are forced by this guy to drive matchbox cars and people are smashed into smitherines because the cars are smaller and lighter… READ: LESS PROTECTION!??!! Oh, I guess with his Socialized Medicine they will look at it as a net gain.

What happens if we save gas? We dont buy as much! If we dont buy as much, the govt wont be making all that money from the taxes we pay per gallon. When they dont make as much money, what happens??? THE GAS TAX GOES UP EVEN HIGHER TO MAKE UP THE LOSS!

So we are supposed to be happy to be like California?? Let’s see. They bring in more energy than any other state. Unemployment, their budget, and their taxes are sky high and they still have smog. Its not working!

#1 & 2, wake up and realize that we have the oil here in the USA but the envirowakkos dont want to let us drill for it. We know its there and we have enough for ages. We dont need the Arabs or anyone else. The govt allows themselves to be afraid of people who worship some object before being concerned about PEOPLE. There is no reason we cant drill off the coast.

If the govt really cared about the auto industry they would get their nose out of it. Why do they have so many regulations? Why are there so many formulas for gas? Gas went up about 25 cents in the last few weeks and among the reasons are that we are using “summer formula.” Well make one formula for the whole country. We have so many different formulas for different states, cities, regions. No wonder why gas is expensive.

You think GM, etc cant build cars that run on battery which work? The govt wont let them because they need the gas tax!

#6, I also saw that pigs fly. It was on the web too!

And does anyone know the percentage of oil we bring in from the Arabs? I recall it being a very small amount.

Obama and his left wing party is killing the country piece by piece. I hope people wake up and let their reps know that we are holding them personally responsible for this mess in 2010 and beyond.

Did anybody ever think how old fashioned it is to go to a gas station to fill up your tank?? It remind me of the old days when you had to go to a well for a cup of water. Imagine going to a gas station to charge your cell phone.

It the administration is so eager to reduce petroleum consumption, then why isn’t there a major initiative to convert the freight trains in the US to electrical power? It seems like currently the standard is the use of diesel powered electric motors for freight trains.

What happened to all the research being done on converting coal to a liquid gasoline substitute? There is some talk about building new nuclear powered electricity generating plants in the US. What is happening with this?

Can cars become more energy efficient without becoming less safe? One way to increase energy efficiency of cars and also reduce automobile fatalities is to reduce highway speed limits. Perhaps the US should have a law limiting speed limits nationally to 50 mph. That would save plenty of gasoline and many lives.

“First, diesel electric locomotives are quite fuel efficient — similar to hybrid automobiles”

That is due to the use of metal tracks and metal wheels, not the way their engines work.

“What would really help would be to improve the general freight rail system, so that there would be less use of the much less fuel efficient trucks”

The efficiency comparison of trains vs trucks is misleading. Trains are much more fuel efficient than trucks for hauling huge amounts of very dense cargo like coal, but not for hauling small amounts of less dense materials, as the weight of the empty trains is so great. There is also very limited rail infrastructure.

The Obama administration is counting on the public being a bunch of gullible fools, who absolutely refuse to use their common sense. Let’s see, we are going to go from 27.5 mpg to 39 mpg (what will be needed for passenger cars when light trucks are figured in), and it will only cost $1300 per car? If it only cost $1300 per car to increase the fuel economy of a car by 50%, THEY WOULD ALREADY BE DOING IT? Duh!!! $1300 wouldn’t even pay for 1/4 the batteries for a hybrid. Then you’ve got all the development costs, retooling, regulatory requirements, and legal costs. This is another total lie from the Lying Left, who consistently under report the cost of regulations for their own agenga. So, the rule of thumb is “if you hear a cost from the government for manufacturers (especially for automobiles) to meet a regulation, just completely disregard it -it’s ALWAYS a lie. ALWAYS.”
