In an interview with NBC News, Tony West, Uber’s chief legal and security officer said the company’s app will push out an alert for riders to check the license plate, make and model of the vehicle as well as the name and picture of the driver to confirm the correct person is picking them up.
The move comes https://in.reuters.com/article/south-carolina-crime/murdered-south-carolina-student-may-have-thought-car-was-her-uber-ride-police-idINKCN1RC0MD weeks after a man was charged in the murder of a University of South Carolina student who may have gotten into her killer’s car mistakenly believing that it was her Uber ride.
Uber did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
A lot of people have died or been hurt by accidentally approaching or entering the wrong car, in the belief that it was their ride-sharing car. Some states, such as Florida, only require cars to have rear license plates, so the rider will have no idea what the license plate number is of the car driving up to him. Recognizing the make/model of cars is also hard for many people. I don’t know that these actions by Uber will help very much.
Why not require uber cars to put some kind of strip/ or intendifier on the outside so people can see? It should’ve cost too much money
