New York – Veteran civil rights lawyer Michael Sussman has argued more than 20 cases before U.S. Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor, and if there’s one thing he’s learned, it’s this:

“Is she someone who will be reliably on the liberal side of a case? No,” he said Tuesday morning, minutes after President Barack Obama announced his nomination of Sotomayor.
Her life story – from the Bronx housing projects to Yale Law School to the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals – reads like Horatio Alger for the new century but Sussman cautions against drawing too much significance from that.
“It’s an emotional day because we tend to view things – and I do the same – stereotypically, but I think that from all my experiences with her, the major feeling I have is that this is a centrist person,” he said. “I wouldn’t say she’s a dependable vote, one way or another, on an issue.”
Sotomayor has ruled against Sussman in special education cases, and last year, she rejected his appeal on behalf of a Town of Wallkill police officer who claimed he was damaged by false accusations made by his fellow officers.
Four years ago, Sussman warned liberals not to rush to judgment about John Roberts, who was among his contemporaries at Harvard Law School. Sussman said conservatives who treat Sotomayor as an ideologue during confirmation hearings do so at their own peril.
“She’s brilliant, she’s poised, she’s fast enough, intellectually, to meet them. You can always cherry-pick a decision here and there, and both sides do it, but plainly, the body of her work is centrist. There’s a presumption of how she’s going to view the world. I think she’s much more subtle.”
What makes him a civil rights lawyer -only defending minorities? Does he defend Jews when they are discriminated against (we aren’t considered minority)?
If she is good enough for Sussman, she should be good enough for any yidden reading this article. He knows these issues well and is an expert on court appointments.
