Staten Island, NY – An eruv, or symbolic boundary for Sabbath-observant Jews, was removed from a neighborhood on Staten Island.

The eruv had been put up on utility poles around the neighborhood by a group of Hasidic Orthodox Jewish residents. They removed it after other residents put up lawn signs expressing opposition to an influx or religious Jews in their neighborhood. The residents had not yet secured the necessary permission from Con Ed, Verizon, or the Transportation Department, Spectrum News reported.

The lawn signs, created by the Westerleigh Improvement Society, read: “Westerleigh Strong. We’re Not Selling.” They reportedly referred to Hasidic Jews from Brooklyn’s Boro Park looking to move into the neighborhood, the Advance reported.

The Orthodox residents have submitted paperwork to the local council to reattach the eruv.

The Westerleigh Improvement Society said in a statement: “We are thankful that most of the Eruv has been removed, as it was installed without the required permission, required insurance, and did not follow standard or established details … We would like to call attention to the fact that we have a thriving community that we love, made up of folks of many ethnic and religious backgrounds, and welcome our new neighbors to assimilate with us and expect and insist that we all abide by the same laws and processes. So far these normal expectations have not been demonstrated.”

Recent meetings of the society have included the yelling of “anti-Semitic comments,” the Advance reported, citing multiple unnamed sources.

An eruv allows Sabbath-observant Jews to carry objects, including carrying children or pushing a stroller, outside of their private property. Without it, parents of young children are confined to their homes on the Sabbath.

On Thursday, the Chabad of Staten Island synagogue building was spray painted with the words “Synagogue of Satan.”

Staten Island is the only congressional District in NYC who voted Trump. Brooklyn , Manhattan, Queens, Bronx are all liberal Democrats where Jews are welcome. Before you thinking of Republican North Dakota, Alabama etc just think for a moment. Even in SI (NYC) where the Republicans are in control Jews are not w welcome like in the old MAGA days. No Jews or dogs allowed, No MAGA Never again.

The anti-semitic instigators were undoubtedly long time Italian and Irish residents, who have hated all Jews for generations, and not just Chassidim.

It’s a gevaldik hashgacha protis that goyim are helping yidden be Shomer Shabbos. I think it’s time that frumm yidden set aside convince and actually learn hilchos eruvin. Their is no way in the world for an eruv to be kosher without buying the reshus from the City. Baruch Hashem That this is finally being taken care of. Chaval that it had to bring us the chillul Hashem, but us Yidden are smart enough to learn from our mistakes. let’s is follow the mitzvos b’hidur with Goan Yaakov and you will see the goyom respect us for that.

I remember that the anti-semites in the Hamptons, including secular Jews, tried to stop a community of non-Chassidic Jews from erecting an Eruv. The Jews won, after going to court, as they did in other locations throughout the USA.

Ther is a HUGE Chillul Hashemin building an Eruv to comply with Hilchos Hotza-ah while ignoring Dina De-Malchusa. Also think about why people don’t welcome us into their community. Is it all a thoughtless ant-isemitism? Should we say good morning to neighbors we meet on the street? Should we maintain our properties on the level of the community? etc, etc. In other words, is it futile to try to befriend and be nice in the eyes of a community?

You have to follow the rules. You can not due just what you want to do. This is not not Israel. Criticisms are valid! Anti semitic yelling and screaming is wrong. So is spray paint garbage.

Hatzna leches im elokecha- who thinks it’s alright to to put anything on another’s property without reshus? The law is on our side, it may just take a little more time to do it right. Chillul H-shem is something to be avoided at all costs.

Democrats only welcome Muslims and illegals. They hate Jews. Jews are the essence of everything they can’t stand in America.

To call this antisemitic is insulting. I have family who live on SI in a diverse area with people of all backgrounds with no problems. When will frum Jews especially Hasidim start looking inward and learn how to live with other groups of people or ask the question why the resentment towards them? You can’t move in to every neighborhood and abuse laws, codes and common decency. They put up Eiruv without approval and play antisemitism card when it doesn’t work their way.
My family lived in Boro Park for over 20 years; not once were we treated as Jews of equal or even people. None Jews are treated as daily servants: no hello or thank you, or holding doors in an elevator while others do it for them. Traffic laws, sanitation and building codes are violated daily. People see and remember that. You forced out Italians from your neighborhoods and would never sell a house to a none-Jew or even a none religious Jew but flood other areas and act like everyone owes something but don’t want to be part of those established communities that have their norms and follow basic rules.

Staten Island also had the strongest turnout for Trump… Coincidence? I am sure there are a lot of fine people on both sides of this debate.

To: #25 - Who needed the Talenas in Borough Park? They were not always nice to Yidden.

The main opponent to the Hampton eruv was a fat old embittered leftist gay Jew, our own kind of some of the biggest haters, Google Charles Gottesman

To: #30 - It was not the Jews in Borough Park, who would yell out anti-semitic epithets to the Italians, or proceed to beat them up, as it was the other way around, smart aleck.

Sadly no one seems to mention that maybe we should move to Israel . There no one will rip down your Eruv.

Extremists on the Right and on the Left have common ground on hating Yidden. But commenter #31 is being disingenuous by citing the lack of Eiruv in the Dakotas, and other heavily Republican States. There are no frum communities there, so no need for an eiruv; it’s not the Conservative Trump supporters who are keeping Jews out of their cities; there is no infrastructure for a frum person to move there; I’m sure if there was a concerted effort by several hundred frum families to move to one of these communities, they would be welcomed (maybe not with opened arms, but welcomed).
How the twisted leftist Hillary supporters (who smiled and stayed quiet while Mrs. Arafat claimed Israel was poisoning Palestinian children) equate sanctuary cities, and killing babies (NY & VA just voted to allow 9th month abortions; not only can the baby be evicted from the mother, she also had the right to execute him if he comes out alive!) with loving frum Yidden (when in actuality they love Farrakhan & Sarsour) is beyond me.
