Osher Shapiro launched the local-rate number for those who find themselves in areas where such facilities are not widely available. The new service will build on the information he has already gathered for London, Manchester and Newcastle.
According to research last year at Manchester University’s centre for Jewish studies, almost three out of every four British Jewish births are in strictly Orthodox families, accounting for 46,500 out of a total population of around 280,000, or just under 17%.
The biggest cluster of strictly Orthodox communities can be found in Stamford Hill, east London, which is home to 20,000 Haredis, who follow the most theologically conservative form of Judaism.
The helpline number is 020 3151 3151.
Do they have a website as well? It seems like a website would be more effective than the telephone for most people.
