The Los Angeles Police Department said Thursday the collision occurred early Monday in a San Fernando Valley neighborhood.

Graphic security video shows a light-colored pickup with a camper shell striking a pedestrian at a crosswalk.

Officials identified the victim as 91-year old Gennady Bolotsky and said he died at a hospital.

The family told KABC that he came to the U.S. as a refugee during World War II to escape Nazi occupation in Europe.

“He was supposed to live to 100 or more. At 91, he had more energy than a person half his life,” his son, Michael Bolotsky, said.

Neighbors told the station that Gennady Bolotsky was hit by a car in the same spot 15 years ago and survived.

The city of Los Angeles is offering a reward up to $50,000 for information that leads to an arrest.

I was going to criticize the misspelling of the city, Los Angeles.

In truth, Gennady Bolotsky was a living angel. The spelling is appropriate.

BDE! Unfortunately, pedestrians cannot depend on crosswalks, or even green lights, to ensure their safety from motor vehicles. Yidden, please, when you cross a street, even if you have the green light, be sure to look in all directions, to make sure that a car will in fact stop. Many times, cars turning either left or right, will not yield to a pedestrian. The same applies to cars who have to come to a dead stop, at a red light. Often, they want to race through the light. The same applies to crosswalks, which are no guarantee of safety. We’ve seen these deadly scenarios occur in Borough Park, and in other neighborhoods. I remember, in April, 1980, nearly 40 years ago, just before Pesach, at the southeast corner of Avenue J and Coney Island Avenue, a woman went into the candy store for a minute, possibly to buy a newspaper. She left her baby carriage with her infant outside, in the carriage. All of a sudden, a car came zooming by and struck her baby carriage on the sidewalk; the lunatic driver must have lost control, and mounted the sidewalk. The baby was killed; I don’t know if the driver was ever caught, but it was horrible!
