London – The government said today it would fight any legal action brought by right-wing US radio host Michael Savage after he was barred from entering the country for “unacceptable behaviour”.

Savage has threatened to sue Home Secretary Jacqui Smith for defamation after he was named on a list she announced this month of 16 banned individuals, which included a Hamas lawmaker, anti-gay protesters and a Jewish extremist.
Savage, whose real name is Michael Alan Weiner, was planning to sue for 100,000 pounds and had instructed London-based solicitors Olswang to begin proceedings.
The lawyers have written to Smith and demanded she retract the allegations and make a personal apology.
But a spokesman for the Home Office said it would not back down. “He was excluded for engaging in unacceptable behaviour by making comments that might provoke others to serious criminal acts and foster hatred that might lead to inter-community violence,” the spokesman said.
“Any legal proceedings would be robustly defended; we stand by our decision to exclude this individual.
“Coming to the UK is a privilege that we refuse to extend to those who abuse our standards and values to undermine our way of life.”
Savage has been accused of racism and homophobia and once wished that a critical caller would die of AIDS.
However, an appeal for donations to support his legal challenge posted on his website insists he has never advocated violence.
“He has repeatedly called for the lawful enforcement of America’s borders, language, and culture. He has never advocated violence, or he would not have lasted in radio for 15 minutes, let alone 15 years,” the appeal says.

He will more than likely lose this case. I happen to think Michael Savage is VERY funny and is a top-notch radio entertainer. I think he says what he says for shock and entertainment value to keep listeners listening (that is his job after all).

Freedom of speech is freedom of ALL speech. You can’t have it both ways. If you stand up for Savage based on the principle of free speech, than you have to accept the free speech of others even when you disagree. If not, you are just a hypocrite. Anyone who listens to Dr. Savage knows he’s not a racist and never advocated violance. If you go with their logic there are many media and political personalities who should be banned. Will they dare ban Al Sharpton? I also belive it was someone in the Obama administration who suggested this.

Michael Savage tells it like it is. Various radio stations are afraid and are easily intimidated by threats and advertiser cancellations, so they do not want Mr. Savage o theri stations.
