The incident took place at approximately 12:30 this afternoon at the 4000 block of Sandpiper Road at False Cape State Park.

According to Coast Guard Sector Unit public affairs officer Lieutenant Steve Arguellas, the teacher was chaperoning a group of boys on a trip to Virginia Beach when he noticed a student having difficulty in the water. The 35 year old jumped into the water to help the boy, who made it back to shore safely.

The teacher, who sources have identified as Rabbi Reuven Bauman, has not been seen since.

The Coast Guard, Virginia Resource Marine Commission and the Virginia Beach Fire Department all have rescue boats on scene, with a Virginia Fire helicopter circling the area near Little Island State Park.

ABC13 (http://bit.ly/30oAbx7) reported that red flags were flying in the area to indicate that swimming was prohibited . Rough waters and multiple currents have hampered the search for the 35 year old, which is being considered a recovery and not a rescue mission.

The Yeshiva Toras Chaim website lists the 35 year old Rabbi Bauman as a sixth and seventh grade secular studies teacher and a third grade Judaic studies teacher.

Speaking with an ABC reporter, Rabbi Alexander Harper who was at the beach with Rabbi Bauman and approximately 20 children, asked for continued prayers for the missing teacher.
