A travel advisory issued by the New York State Thruway announced nightly ramp closures and detours which began at 9 PM on July 29th for the installation of concrete slabs on the roadway as the agency installs cashless tolling at the Harriman Toll Barrier.

The first stage of roadwork is taking place on the I-87 southbound ramp at exit 16 of the Thruway which links the highway with routes 6 and 17 in Harriman. The ramp will be closed from 9 PM until 6 AM nightly through Thursday and from 9 PM until 7 AM from Friday night into Saturday morning.

Motorist who want to access Route 17 and the Catskills in Harriman will be taken on a lengthy detour, directed onto the Thruway to exit 15A in Sloatsburg, located nearly 14 miles to the south, and then back onto the highway northbound for the return trip back to exit 16 in Harriman.

Roadwork on the southbound ramp is expected to be completed by August 2nd.

The second stage of the project will begin the following week, with crews shutting down the northbound Thruway ramp nightly starting on August 5th from 10 PM to 6 AM. Closures will be in effect at the same time each night through August 8th, with the ramp closed until 7 AM on the last scheduled morning of the project on August 9th.

Drivers on Route 17 looking to access the northbound Thruway towards Albany in Harriman will also be subjected to the nearly 28 mile round trip through Sloatsburg.

All closures are subject to change due to weather conditions and other circumstances.

Posted speed limits will be in effect in the work zones. Closure information will be posted on electronic message boards on the Thruway, with real time traffic alerts on the Thruway’s mobile app.

    Depending where you are..

Drive West on I-80 in Jersey to exit 34, taking Nj 15 North, which ends up becoming US 206 North into Pennsylvania, follow US 209 North and then signs to NY 42 North which takes you into Monticello.

Believe it or not this is not a bad alternative if NY-17’traffic is bad.
