Washington - President Donald Trump tweeted Thursday that the White House is continuing to review the possibility of commuting the sentence of former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who is serving time on multiple federal corruption convictions.

Trump suggested more than a year ago that he was considering a commutation for the Democratic ex-governor. Blagojevich then filed paperwork formally requesting one.

Trump tweeted Thursday that Blagojevich had served half of his 14-year sentence.

“Many people have asked that I study the possibility of commuting his sentence in that it was a very severe one,” Trump said. “White House staff is continuing the review of this matter.”

The Republican president told reporters Wednesday night while returning to Washington that he was “very strongly” considering commuting the sentence because he thought Blagojevich had been treated “unbelievably unfairly.”

Trump said he’s taking into consideration Blagojevich’s wife and children and what was, in his view, mere braggadocio.

Blagojevich’s wife, Patti, reacted by tweeting that Trump’s comments about her husband, who has been in federal prison since 2012, leave her family hopeful that their “nightmare might soon be over.”

Compassion is they fabric of this country . This cruelty of you do the crime you do the time needs to be stopped . People get tempted . Unless one is a threat to society or needs to be taught a lesson why lock a dad up and snatch him away from
His kids ?

Mass incarceration needs to stop . And yes that includes locking up rich white dudes who make mistakes too. In fact it's more cruel if you are a rich white vs a poor person of color . The rich man has a strong social and family life . You are yanking that away from him . The poor dude who was in the streets had no life anyhow .

Bottom line both need compassion

Instead of "considering it", why don't you do it, now! How long does it take to make that decision?

He wants to see the blowback from all the haters. Just in case there is some evidence that he was not made aware of.

You guys, 1 thru three, are morons.

Blagojevich was convicted on multiple counts of public corruption, including trying "buy" an appointment to Obama's former Senate seat and shaking down a children's hospital and other businesses.

Trump's just proving the adage "...birds of a feather stick together..." - immoral and corrupt, both of them.

I am all for compassion toward the weak, those who make a mistake, those who were forced into crime by circumstances.

This is just another rich man who wants to get away with his crime. Let him rot in jail.

Whereas if Trump had a (D) after his name, and Blagogevich an (R), you'd be falling all over yourself cheering how the President is reaching across the aisle, and not just supporting those of his political party, etc. etc....

Face it, Dyslexic YonasanW, you've shot the arrow and then drawn the target around it. You don't hate Trump because of what he's said or done (or not said and not done); you start out by hating him, and therefore automatically whatever he says or does, you consider wrong. There's a term for that - sin'as chinam.

And for that you punish a father of children for 14 years? For taking a few bribes or "shochad"? Is that such a terrible crime? Where is your compassion? Or there is none on rich white dudes? I'll leave out that all politcans more or less work like this. But really in scope of things, OJ simpson gets way with murder (oh bec he wasn't "convicted") While this guy for some bribes languishes?

Are you so sodom like?

No trump is just proving that taking few dollars when you are not suppose to is not such a big crime. Only in your bitter slefish intellectual world.

If you cared so much about moral values you'd stop lying and scamming everyone on VIN too. You are of the same feathers big talker

Oh, Educated Archy, so much to unpack!
"Unless one is a threat to society"
Corrupt politicians, bribery, etc. are major threats to society as they undermine the credibility of government.
"Snatch him away from kids"
While family ties should be a factor in considering punishment, having kids should not be a "get out of jail free card." It was his choice to commit the crimes, his choice to risk going to jail.
"Mass incarceration..."
You are the first person I've ever seen who thinks that rich white dudes are the subject of mass incarceration.
"rich white vs poor person of color....poor dude who was in the streets had no life anyhow"
Oh, just stop! Poor colored people don't have strong social ties or a family life?
That's just a broad racist stereotype. Who are you to say that poor people of color "had no life" and do it in a way that implies going to jail is no big deal?

Gee, the laws against taking bribes are in the Torah a number of times.
Good timing because the effects of taking bribes are mentioned multiple times on Tish B'Av. So, yeah, it is a terrible crime.
