“We take great pride in producing wholesome confectionery products with fresh ingredients of the highest quality. This will bring our iconic brands to an entirely new consumer base that can now enjoy our products,” said Ellen Gordon, President, Tootsie Roll Industries.

The OU rigorously monitors of all aspects of production. It supervises the process by which the food is prepared, examines the ingredients used to make the food, and regularly inspects the processing facilities to make sure that its standards are met.

“We are very pleased to have Tootsie Roll join with other leading confectionery producers who have attained OU certification in recent years. It was also gratifying for OU to guide Tootsie Roll through the certification process and bring these famous candies to the growing kosher market place,” said Rabbi Eliyahu Safran, OU Kosher’s Vice President of Communications and Marketing. “It was rewarding for OU Kosher’s team, headed by Rabbis Dovid Jenkins and Abraham Juravel, as well as Phyllis Koegel, OU Marketing Associate, to corroborate with Tootsie Roll’s team and bring the much sought after Tootsie Roll products to an ever-growing kosher market place.”

Can someone explain to me why the OU still uses cholov stam intodays age while I know R Moshe Zatzal said its kosher , the facts are that there is a big section of our community that does not eat cholov stam , all they would need to do is use cholov yisroel and so many more customers would buy these products , it make the OU stronger and gives them more power to sell their certification to companies

Goyish? Says: Shouldn’t we support the jewish candy brands?

Reply » Do you mean the frum brands that make their drek in China and risk our health or the brands that specialize in exporting israeli outdated stuff to us, usually around Purim?

Since Tootsie Rolls bought Dubble Bubble 3 years ago, they took away the OU from them. They also make Charlseton Chews, which used to be kosher, and Junior Mints, which can be very refreshing.

The last thing we need is more sweet kosher nosh. Look in any kosher supermarket and you’ll see that we have more candy and nosh than the largest goysha stores have. We managed for years with very little and did ok.

It’s amazing what the kashrus business has become! Certification agencies fighting over the last dollar to be made and the only person who suffers is the kosher consumer by paying higher prices for the same product. All these products were kosher 30 years ago, even without the hashkachas, e.g., Drakes, Entenmanns, Tootsie Roll. They did not change their formulas to satisfy the OU. Today, it is all marketing. You have to have the proper hashkacha or your daughter will remain an old maid forever. What shtus!

    Seriously?

Does anybody have a serious answer as to why a candy item, such as Twizzlers, sometimes has 3 or 4 different Hashgacha stickers on it, in addition to the OU. I mean, are there really people out there who will only buy it with these special stickers but wouldn’t buy it without? I am trying not to believe that this is all a big money-making sham for these Rabbis. Please help me believe that this is not the case.

You have just made me feel much better about not drinking/eating exclusively CY. It costs much much more than $100 per year.
I do buy CY milk only since there is not a big price difference, nor is there a taste difference and we use enough milk in our house that it doesn’t spoil.
But fast forward to ice cream. CY costs about $5.99 (sometimes more, sometimes less) for whatever passes for a 1/2 gallon these days. Regular Edy’s or Bryers, in addition to tasting better, is on sale every other week or so for $2 to $3. That is $3 per container and we use about 2-3 per week. Assuming 2 per week and 50 weeks per year, there is your $100, before my cream cheese ($4 compared to $1.50), snack chocolate ($2 a bag vs $7 a bag), butter, yogurt, cottage cheese etc. CY costs double to triple the regular. I would definitely buy more CY but it is really really expensive.

So technically they were “kosher” the whole time then.Don’t tell me that all the sudden after decades of Tootsie Rolls that they just changed the recipe?…doubt it.
So now the company is paying who knows how much to have the hechsher put on….got to love the politics!
