South Fallsburg, NY – Four people died Saturday morning when a car hit a tree so hard that the vehicle split in half, Fallsburg police said.

The victims’ names were not released because their families had not been notified. Detective Travis Hartman said the four were in their 20s and 30s.
The crash happened just after 10 a.m. when a black Infiniti failed to navigate a curve while driving north on Pleasant Valley Road. Police believe the car was being driven too fast.
The Infiniti crossed into the opposite lane, sideswiped a Dodge Durango, and then ran off the road. The driver’s door struck the tree so hard that the car split in half, crumpled and came to rest against a chain-link fence that runs along the Tarry Brae Golf Course.
“Given the injuries and the fatalities, this is one of the worst (accidents) we’ve ever seen,” Fallsburg police Chief Simmie Williams said.
The car was carrying six passengers when it crashed. Four were pronounced dead at the scene.
The crash was along a stretch of Pleasant Valley Road that is especially dangerous because of a curve.
It’s been the site of numerous accidents over the years, including at least two fatal accidents, in 2001 and 2002, that killed a total of four people.

Very sad. Drivers need to learn to be humble on the road and never feel comfortable of the road. I drive like a slow grandma when I’m upstate where roads are very curvy just to be on the safe side.

Wilmer Hernandez, 31, of South Fallsburg; Jesse Maldonado, 19, of South Fallsburg; Erlin Rubio, 24, of Woodridge and Jose Rivera, 31, of Swan Lake were all pronounced dead at the scene.
Chris Edwards, 24, of Liberty and Ever Padilla, 22, of South Fallsburg were severely injured and transported to the helipad at the nearby SYDA Foundation, and then Westchester Medical Center.
They were listed in critical condition Sunday morning, Detective Travis Hartman said. He didn’t know the extent of their injuries.
