Brooklyn, NY – Former Sen. Seymour Lachman has decided not to join the fray in the 44th Council District, informing me during a brief interview this afternoon that he is deferring to the wishes of his wife and steering clear of a return to public life – for now.

Lachman, who floated his name just three weeks ago, read me the text of an e-mail he will be sending out tomorrow morning that explains “personal and familiar reasons” prevent him from entering the race for former Councilman Simcha Felder’s Brooklyn seat.
“It does not mean that in the future I will not consider running for public office; I will consider things that come up, as they come up, in the next year or two,” Lachman said. “Nothing is excluded from consideration.”
“Politics, as you know, is a very unusual and strange venture. Anything can happen. Maybe nothing will happen. At this time, I’m bowing to my wife’s wishes.”
“…After you’ve been married to the same woman for almost 40 years, it has to be a major consideration. My wife is very special to me. I thought I could convince her, but I could not.”
Adding to the difficulty of Lachman’s decision was the fact that he and his wife would have had to relocate into the 44th CD (this is a problem for a number of the candidates). Lachman said he would not have been content to simply get an apartment and stay there a few days a week. Apparently, his wife wasn’t big on this idea.
Lachman said he plans to be “active” in the 44th CD special election, which Mayor Bloomberg recently called for March 23, and will endorse a candidate “soon.”
He hinted that he’ll be choosing between either David Greenfield or Joe Lazar, but didn’t give any indication as to which of those contenders has the inside edge.
Lachman’s decision not to get into the race puts a number of elected officials’, including Sen. Diane Savino, back play in terms of endorsements. Savino had supported Greenfield, but then withdrew that support when she learned that her predecessor might join the race.

savino never pulled her endorsement of david. she said that lachman joining the race would com-licate things for her.

Seymour Lachman has given many years to public service both in education and Albany. His continued devotion to the Jewish community and to Israel has been nothing less than exemplary. May he and Mrs. Lachman continue to enjoy many years in good health, MH’. They both deserve our sincere gratitude.
