Great Neck, NY – In the Village of Great Neck, an old eyesore will be cleaned up as a small synagogue moves from a rented storefront across Piccadilly Road, south, to 429 Middle Neck Road.

Rabbi Joseph Alon, on behalf of Kol Israel Achim Inc., petitioned the village’s Board of Appeals for a conditional use permit to allow the small congregation to clean up the old Piccadilly Gas Station site and renovate the property to allow a synagogue.
This eyesore, the site of an old gas station at 429 Middle Neck Road, will soon be removed and a synagogue built.
The synagogue is permitted at that site, provided the board of appeals grants a special use permit. It is the job of the board of appeals to address certain issues such as parking safety and site planning (lay-out, shrubs, etc.). The synagogue’s proposal would need a variance from the on-site parking required under village code. The first hearing was held last Thursday evening, Feb. 4. A second hearing is slated for Thursday evening, March 4.
Not an ideal location for a Shul. Depsite the assurances that land is bound to be contaminated with toxins. I wouldn’t daven there.
It would be great if they could bury those ugly power lines too.
The Village of Great Neck has a very long history of hating Religious institutions. A mayor 30 years ago, declared, there will never be a orthodox synagauge in Great Neck, todya there are a dozen.
The Yeshiva of Great Neck Spent Sevarl Hundred Thousand dollars on Fees and such for the most ridiculous reasons.
Cong Shirah Chadasha, payed almost 1,000,000 in Lawyer fees alone, just to get a permit to build a new shul.
Let’s hope the new mayor will bring a change for the better.

Yeshiva Chaim Berlin was built on top of an old gas station about 20 years ago and I do not believe there are any enviormental issues Boruch Hashem.
A gas station can be cleaned up properly!
CAUTION: The reason the gas station is abandoned is that there are new Federal safety rules that require gas station tank removals and toxic cleanups. The owner obviously couldn’t afford the clean up so it was abandoned.
The site cannot be used for ANY commercial purpose without a cleanup. Therefore, the Town is allowing a toxic waste site to be used as a Shul. This is a violation of the spirit of the law if not the letter of the law. It should be reviewed by the EPA.
Do the future congregants want to expose their children to cancer causing agents? Remember, the old tanks leaked gas and in the old days oil change oil was dumped into the yard. There were no disposal rules. That stuff is percolating under the soil and is breathed in with the dust.

About time the anti religious township committee gave them the permit. The amount of tzaros they give the frumma especially the yeshiva(which is a major reason why there has been such a MAJOR MAJOR awakening of yiddishkait in gn)is unbelievable
This should fuel new interest in the shul, as well as pump new energy into yiddishkeit in the area. It will fill up Great Neck not just with regular, but rather premium, commitment to yahadus.
