New York – Governor Paterson is considering a controversial plan to pay the state’s bills, keeping your money a little longer.

His office is looking into the possibility of delaying tax refunds until June first in order to have more money on hand at the start of the next fiscal year, that adds up to about half-a-billion dollars.

The state does not have to pay interest on your money until 45-days after April 15th, so it is looking to keep it as long as possible.  Assemblyman Tim Gordon says that is like an interest free loan to New York. And he calls that simply wrong.

“I don’t know if the governor is in touch with people across the state who go to the mail box hoping upon hope that the tax refund will be there so they can meet their commitments, do grocery shopping, or many things for their families,” Gordon said, “to find the check simply isn’t there for no good reason.”

The governor’s office says this is just an option, and nothing is drawn up yet.

To me that’s called legal robbery.
Shome on you Governor for even thinking like a crook.

Wonder if I wouldn’t pay my taxes on time if I would be allowed to do it.

    What Chutzpah

I knew it. I predicted this in a comment a few months ago on VIN. I just don’t remember which story I posted my prediction in.

I want to not pay my taxes until June 1 because I would have more cash on hand in my next fiscal year. Do you think that would work?

OK…what’s good for the goose….I won’t pay them if I owe them until June. At least. Let them try jailing/fining me.

Seriously, I bet this is unconstitutional. It won’t happen. And he wants to be Governor again? What an idiot! This sure as hell won’t help him.

To all who are objecting to Gov. Paterson’s actions here:

Please cite which taxes you would like to have increased and/or which government-funded programs you and/or community benefit from that you would like to have cut.

I have a compromise on this (and I know many of you won’t like it).

Those who recieve a gift from the government (actually from me and all the other people that pay taxes) named EIC or any other name should not get the money until the state has the money for it. But those of us that overpaid and are only getting back our own money that we stupidly borrowed the state, should get their money as soon as they file.

I am not right about this?

Last year many of my clients received the federal refund without delay but for some reason were getting audit forms from NYS. At first I wondered why an individual with a simple W-2 would be getting an audit request to send in a copy of his license, children s birth certificates, etc.., then as additional clients received them it became obvious. By issuing a paper audit NYS would delay the refund for several months, thereby keeping the funds interest free at a time when the state was severely strapped for cash.

Perhaps Gordon should explain his yes vote to a budget that increased taxes by $8 billion and spending by 9%. That put a hardship on every NY’er, not just those who are getting a tax return. This is political grandstanding.

i canot believe the governor of a state that is obviously in trouble, would suggest something to yet again hurt it’s residents. we are all waiting for these refunds to pay bills, grocery shop, to just plain catch up. we don’t have the choice to postpone paying the taxes, why should you have the right to postpone our refunds. this is definetly not going to gain any popularity for the governor.

The reasons to leave this state just keep piling up. Bite me Governor Paterson. You are a loser.

First of all, if everyone would do their withholding throughout the year properly, they would be able to keep their money throughout the year. Second, if you hate New York and their taxes so much, why are you living here?? There are 50 other states that are probably much better. I’m moving to Atlanta in June for just this reason. NY is a big wasteland and people live here and complain deserve it.
