Maimonides Medical Center’s bustling obstetrics unit is the busiest in New York State – with a record 7,746 New Yorkers born at the Brooklyn hospital last year.

This year shows no sign of letting up.

“It’s a little bit like being an air-traffic controller,” said nursing director Carol Kidney. “They come, they go, they come again. It never stops.”

With 11 labor and delivery rooms and 60 postpartum beds in one hospital, and a state law that says new moms have to be discharged in 48 hours, it’s a daily dance of musical beds and babies.

One recent morning there were 90 newborns in the nursery – “a little city of babies,” said Dr. Howard Minkoff, the chairman of obstetrics and gynecology. “To be honest, we are overwhelmed,” said Minkoff, who oversees a medical team of 100. “We want to give people the most wonderful experience we can in creature comforts – their bagel and baby and two restful days here – but wonderful is second to safety.”

After other area hospitals closed, there are many days when the maternity floor at Maimonides looks more like an overbooked hotel with the entire staff scrambling to handle the overflow. On those days, it’s not uncommon for women who just gave birth to be waiting in a hallway for a room to be cleared and remade.

“Despite how busy they are, they do an outstanding job,” said a spokesman for FOJP, the hospital’s malpractice insurer.

Maimonides’ CEO Pamela Brier said the hospital has invested over $10 million in recent years to assure patient safety.

On the busiest of days, the delicate task of moving moms in and out falls to Malkie Gips, the sunny patient representative.

“You just give them a little noodge, and most people are very sympathetic,” she said. “I say, ‘Remember two days ago when you were waiting downstairs for a room, how lousy that felt? Maybe your husband can pick you up before lunch? Or your mother?’ It’s not my favorite part of the job.”

Apart from the Orthodox Jewish community, which accounts for about half of the births each year, the hospital serves a large influx of Chinese families now living in Sunset Park. Mothers from Latin America, the Caribbean, Bangladesh and good old Bensonhurst are also plentiful.

An ad campaign bragged Maimonides can say “goo-goo in 68 different languages.”

And that’s not all it can say.

If there is no interpreter on the spot, labor nurses have a sign they hold up in Chinese that reads: “PUSH!” and “DON’T PUSH!”

“This is a brand-new unit and we are already outgrowing it,” said Dr. Susan Shi, standing in Mei Chen’s modern room, painted in soothing pastel colors.

Canarsie mom Shana James, 25, and her baby boy were the talk of the maternity floor during her recent stay. Amir Elijah weighed in at 11 pounds, 5 ounces, with a full head of hair. When the bundle of joy arrived via C-section, the pediatrician joked, “That’s a man! He’s going to be able to walk out of here!”

“I was crying, ‘I’m gonna die! Please get this baby out,'” James said. A day and a half later, James – who works at a Manhattan non-profit – was beaming, ready to go home early. “Oh, my God,” she said, hugging her little man, “I just want to bite his cheeks!”

As James was checking out, the labor rooms were refilling with a new wave of expectant moms.

“There are days I come home and think there are no pregnant people left in Brooklyn,” said physician’s assistant Stella Netis. “Then the next day comes, and sure enough, there’s another group. But it’s a happy place.”

Isn’t that a picture of a newborn sleeping on his stomach? When every single medical study shows that it is safest for babies to sleep on their backs

If only the nurses in the delivery room & on the floor were more accommodating. Singing gospel songs, muttering prayers, & moving slower than a stream of molasses uphill are just some of the reasons my children give birth at Staten Island University Hospital.

Wait till the article in the non jewish papers coming up about Maimonides Medical Center’s Maternity.

I just had a baby there at I’m telling you the service & nurses are the worst I’ve seen ever (not all nurses but a nice few)

I think its time people should know what goes on there can someone tell me its normal right after you have a baby they put you to sleep on a COT yes not a strecher even, if you want me to go into more detail then there will be no point in the write coming about the hospital thinking they could do what they want because us jewish people won’t go anywhere else well they better learn if not it will hit them like a ax on their head & people should start going to Methodist etc its way better there

That baby is on his side. The hospital where my baby was born also put newborns to sleep on the side.

If you paid me a million dollars to have a baby in Maimonides I wouldn’t go there. I would rather have my baby in the car. Maimonides hospital is a wreck and does not believe in enforcing visitor rules and the privacy rules you can forget about that.

Every yenta knows whos coming and going and makes phone calls to their friends and tells them whos having what.

I have seen people who unfortuantely lost their baby after child borth and some hemishe people walk in the room not knowing what is going on because it was nonoen of their buisiness int he first place, and mention mazel tov!!

    Silence. So what was it?

Whenever maimonides is approached about enforcing the rule that only a parent , grandparent can visit during certain hours the hospital says, your right but we can’t do anything because every tutzach calls Mr. Jablon or someone else they know and the pressue of getting in trouble is overwhelming.

Trouble for what nobody can explain. I know one thing the hospitals in Manhattan would never tolorate the stuff that goes on in Maimonides hospital .

The reporter garbled the state law. It’s not that “new moms have to be discharged in 48 hours”. It’s that the hospital and the insurance companies must _let her_ stay for 48 hours.
In the Bad Old Days (which weren’t that long ago), the insurance companies did their best to encourage “kick them out ASAP” policies. (Not just for new moms and their infants, of course). The NYS law changed that…

I would never, ever give birth in a hospital that is an assembly line and is frequently overwhelmed. My experience unfortunately is that NYC nurses are horrible, uncaring, sarcastic people. Add to that being overworked and overwhelmed on a regular, but unpredictable, basis, and it is a recipe for disaster. We’re not talking about a phone bank – new mothers and babies need to be watched for certain danger signs, and in that environment carelessness can lead to disaster.

The challenge is to find a mid-sized hospital with caring staff. I am SO glad I had my kids “OUT OF TOWN”.

i wonder if g-d would have made that the men should get pregnant and have the babies,if the rabbonim would not find plenty of HETEIRIM for some birth control methods, in order not to have a baby every year

I just hope that this hospital enforces the visiting rules in the maternity ward…my daughter had a baby there few months ago and next bed was a chineese women . The husband came 9:30 with a bag of smelly food and he and his wife had dinner in the room and my daughter thought she is fainting from the smell. he left the room 11:25 and my daughter could not fall asleep till he left…There is no reason why any father should over stay visiting hours and talk away not taking the next patient into consideration. I complained to the nurse and she said she will report it to security…

Miamonides has problems just like any other hospital. The people in BoroPark don’t want to listen to rules and Douglas gets balmed for it. It’s not fair. Douglas is the pillar of Maimonides. He’s the least appreciated. He gives his life to the hospital. Nobody has the right to blame him for anything. As far as the nurses…., there is place for improvement. I wish they would have to take a course every month on how to deal with human beings. It would change the outlook of Maimonides. PERIOD!!!!!!

Douglas will help you, but, you must be politically connected, or have lots of gelt, then your called a VIP. If your just an average guy, good luck, your going to need it.

If Maimonides is considered a good hospital, then it just shows how bad health care has become. the bar keeps getting lower and lower.

Well I had to wait for a delivery room over an hour. The doctor started my ivy in the hallway and was ready to deliver me their without anything. it took them quite a while untill the room got ready. When it finally did, most of the important supplies were missing from the cabinets. The nurse told me that the room was used 11 times that morning. B’H there were no complication, but being a friend of someone whose baby was braindamaged due to a suction that wasn’t working, I was in fear the whole time. Though I must say, they have one Frum Lady nurse, I don’t know her name who was extra kind although she was exhausted already. I will also thank Neshei volonteers. They are wonderful.

I have to say that miamodies is not one of my choices to have a baby….they are mamish like a factory…..the staff of ob-gyns and nurses are beyond horrible…..the only credit I give to is to mr. jablon……he’s mamish a Tzaddik……and the adult emergency room -thats another story, its mamish just like the maternity ward, HORRIBLE……im just wondering why hasn’t the health department closed them down yet……they took away mamish so many lives…….when will they ever learn…….my guess, never…….

miamodies does have its ups and downs……it wouldn’t be my first choice…….id rather my own bed then any given day than to go to miamodies…….they treat patients like garbage……..my husband had surgery there two years ago, and he still has pain sometimes from his surgery spot……and I still blame the surgeon……i wonder how many lawsuits miamodies has on them……if they don’t, I would be very skeptical to believe this……..

Try delivering in Maimonides and then getting pushed into the overflow unit. 12 or more postpartum women in one room cordoned off with curtains all sharing one bathroom and shower that is a long walk from the room no supplies when needed babies left with moms all day and night or waiting for hours for staff to bring the baby back plus the beds that are left over from the old MICU blowing you up and down. No phones and no meals and other benefits. That’s what you can expect to get when there are not enough beds.

I feel so sorry for the women giving birth in Maimonides, here in Switzerland I get my own beautiful room ( breakfast corner with furniture to recieve guests and my own beautiful en suite bathroom with shower, there is even a painting on the wall in my room)
My baby is brought to me whenever I want I just press a button and the nurse is there, and I get to stay for 6 days!
I really do appreciate it, coming from Canada where people refer to the birthing experience as “drive through delivery”.
Oh well, I hope things improve for the wonderful women of New York!

You can have all those that you mentioned at the hospital, if you don’t have normal nurses then what’s the metzya???? My father was in the hospital a few weeks ago for 5 days. His linen was never changed, he was never washed and he never got a new gown. We took turns satying with him and the 10 o’clock shift thought he was cleaned earlier. Something made me ask my father if he was washed since he was admitted and when he said NO I flew into a rage!!!! Of course I complained, but the PCT had written in her daily report that she DID do all that she was supposed to! The charge nurse believed her! We are witness that it never happened. The maternity Dept is not better. My daughter had a baby, C-Section. She rang for help all night, she needed meds and help to get off the bed to go to the bathroom. nobody came all night. The next morning she complained to a volunteer. The volunteer checked out the problem… The call phone was off the hook!!!!!!!! Can you imagine that? Those lazy nurses dont care… That’s Maimonides for you…

Maimonedis: the credit is not yours for you do nothing to accomodate. You have a lot of deleveries but is your space for that. Rather that building a new CANCER center you should be focusing on maternity care.

    3,500 babies! Kain Yirbu!!
My wife and I were both born at MMC. We had 6 of our own babies at MMC and each experience was wonderful. We once had a baby at NYU and the experience was lousy! MMC keep up your good work! And PLEASE ignore the negativity on this blog.
