New York – Experts Say Sen. Schumer Will Win Reelection Despite Slipping Polls

    19

New York – This has not been an easy winter for Sen. Chuck Schumer, a politician who crafts his public image as obsessively as Michelangelo did the Sistine Chapel.

His job approval rating shows signs of slipping as anti-incumbent fervor sweeps the land, one recent Marist Poll found.

Old friends on Wall Street fear he has gone populist on them.

And still others in the political class whine that Schumer now cares more about his standing nationally in Washington – where some believe he could be the first Senate majority leader from New York – than the folks back home.

The grumbling broke out into the open over Schumer’s brokering of the now dead Senate health care bill, which would have socked the city and the state with $1 billion in extra health costs.

“He has become a more national figure, a more Washington-type,” Marist pollster Lee Miringoff said of the general perception. “And that has run counter to the current, anti-incumbent environment.”

It all makes for good chatter as Schumer faces reelection in the fall to what would be his third term, at a time when nothing is certain for Democrats.

But here’s the reality: Schumer will win again, almost as surely as day follows night, experts predict.

It’s not just that Schumer is a relentless campaigner. He also has a whopping $19 million in campaign cash on hand – tops among senators.

At the same time, whatever resources the New York GOP has are focused on unseating junior Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, who many see as way more vulnerable.

So far, the best the GOP has been able to muster against Schumer is an uncertain effort to draft Larry Kudlow, the conservative CNBC commentator and economist who has admitted to tax and addiction problems in his past.

“I am not even sure that Larry Kudlow could win a straw poll on the set of CNBC,” said Rep. Anthony Weiner, a Schumer fan.

Despite Schumer’s many advantages, the famously frenetic lawmaker is taking nothing for granted. He is maintaining his usual 100-mile-per-hour schedule, steering job creation legislation through the Senate and forcefully telling the White House to get the 9/11 terror trials out of New York.

Schumer disputes the recent Marist poll, pointing to another Quinnipiac survey showing his popularity has remained basically steady.

“You can’t rely on polls,” Schumer told The News. “I work hard to deliver for New Yorkers whether it’s an election year or not.”

Many banking bigwigs complain Schumer has not been standing up to the Wall Street “bashing” that they feel coming from the White House. `They even expressed their displeasure to Schumer’s face during a meeting last November at the business-centric Partnership for New York City.

    Schumer did not back down.

“Chuck was like, ‘Wake up and smell the roses,'” said one witness. “He was very straightforward about how unpopular they are, and how even more unpopular are the public officials who come out and defend them.”

More recently, Schumer has spent private time trying to assure financial leaders that – to the extent their interests and New York’s are the same – he will have Wall Street’s back.

“The financial industry did many things wrong that helped cause the economic crisis,” Schumer told The News. “And my job now is to help fix them in a way that is corrective, not vindictive.”

Upstate, Democratic leaders say Schumer doesn’t need an election-year makeover.

“Chuck is in the county more than I am, and I live here,” joked Len Lenihan, chairman of the Erie County Democratic Committee, an area that includes Buffalo. “He has set the standard.”

This is the year the “experts” will all be shocked. It’s a story in the making every where. Don’t forget the “experts” all thought Martha Coakly was gonna win without even breaking a seat.

They are under estimating how angry people are.

A recent poll show only 7 Percent (7!!) would re elect the current member of their district to congress.

Mr. Schumer is # 3 ranking in the senate. Why would we want to lose seniority ? Unless you would rather vote for Spitzer.

The ‘experts’ who of course never have agendas in their scholarly research, only have one vote just like every other tom and harry. All they can say is who would be hard to defeat, if they say someone won’t be defeated then, you know they are actually working diligently on the reelection of that particular candidate. By the way, if Kudlow runs, he can match Schumers 20 million with his personal dough. Also, he is very embedded in Wall Street and he can squeeze his pals for mega mega mega bucks… so Schumer shouldn’t assume he owns anything.

These are the same “experts” that didn’t see the turnover this last election. They must be oblivious to the ReverseObama rage that is going on. The only reason why Chuck U will win is because of the left wing loony toons in NY who dont know how to think so they walk in goosestep with the party.

Schumer was key to Obama’s plan to force socialized medicine on us. Don’t let him get away with it.

Schumer is everything that I loathe and hate about smarmy politicians. He says and does nothing except what he thinks will advance his ultra-liberal agenda while getting votes.

He was CLinton’s chief defender during the Monica scandal, the chief attack dog in the Senate against Bush, the chief attack dog against the confirmation of John Roberts, Clarence Thomas, and Sam Alito. He loses no opportunity to show off his arrogance and mocking scorn for anyone with whom he disagrees.

An erliche yid, #9 ?, Unless you are meaning to be sarcastic, I never saw such nonsense. Please please put this ultimate menuval baal gaava in his place and vote him OUT!!!!!!!!!

Time for him to go. Lets elect a Republican who will watch our taxes and support NY – not the rest of the country. Nebraska held out and wouldhave received billions per year. This shmendrick sold us out. He also sold out Wall ST which gives him his war chest. Pride goeth before the Fall.

Who will the Republicans put up against him?
If it’s a schlemazel-schlemiel, it’s over before it starts. A decent Republican can give him a good run. And may well pull off an upset. Hallevai!
(I still can’t believe we traded in the noble D’Amato for this hack politician).

I hope the GOP runs a strong candidate against Schumer the Menuval. I was disgusted yet again when Schumer the Menuval insulted Scott Brown and called him a tea bagger and a low life. How dispicable of a sitting Senator to insult in a disgusting manner a candidate of another party out of political hatred. Also, Schumer is in favor of legalizing marijuana so other young frei yidden can destroy their lives with drugs. Schumer supports homosexuals. Schumer is a disgusting man. I don’t support him any more. We Frum Yidden must say no more to these disgusting politicians. Democrat Menuvals all of them.
