Miami, FL – Florida Gov.: Those Who Asked To Halt Execution Mean Well But Don’t Know The Facts, Justice Must Be Done

    82

Miami, FL – Florida Gov. Charlie Crist said Tuesday that his office was the target of “almost an outcry” of nearly 50,000 e-mails, phone calls and letters from people urging him to spare Martin Grossman’s life. “We’ve been swamped,” Crist said.

“I’m getting calls from people who are asking me to stay this execution,” Crist said, “and then once I inquired, ‘Do you know what the facts are?’ I find that they unfortunately do not . . . Sometimes the story can almost get ahead of the facts.”

Crist said he was standing on a Miami International Airport runway tarmac Tuesday afternoon when a close friend of his wife called his cell phone and asked him to halt the execution. Crist said she changed her mind after he described how the killing occurred. The woman, whom Crist declined to identify, said, according to the governor: “I’m glad you shared what the real facts are. I’m sorry to have taken your time.”

Crist said a group of rabbis and Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz were among those urging the execution be stopped. “The sincerity of their message is without question,” Crist said. “I’ve reached the conclusion that justice must be done.”

In a speech to small business owners that was mostly about the state of Florida’s economy, Crist, a Republican candidate for U.S. Senate, went into great detail on the circumstances of the case, including describing the killer as “blowing her brains out.”

The governor said he spoke Monday with former Gov. Bob Martinez, who signed Grossman’s initial death warrant two decades ago. “I was just seeking his advice, because it’s always a good idea,” Crist said.

A spokesman for the governor said that by Friday night the office had received more than 9,443 e-mails and more than 7,849 phone calls about the Grossman case.

“Signing a death warrant is a responsibility that Governor Crist takes very seriously,” spokesman Sterling Ivey wrote in an e-mail to the St. Petersburg Times, “and the warrant for Martin Grossman was signed after a careful review …”

Grossman is the first inmate Florida has put to death for killing a law enforcement officer since the September 2006 execution of Clarence Hill. The Alabama man was executed at the age of 48 for ambushing two Pensacola police officers after a bank robbery on Oct. 19, 1982. He shot and killed Officer Stephen Taylor and wounded another officer as they tried to arrest Hill’s accomplice.

Grossman, of Pasco County, was 19 when he killed Park as she tried to arrest him and 17-year-old Thayne Nathan Taylor in what is now the Brooker Creek Preserve in Tarpon Springs.

Grossman has spent the latter half of his life in prison for the murder. He is the first Florida execution of 2010 and the 69th since the death penalty was restored in 1976.

Park, a Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission officer, found a stolen Luger pistol in the van Grossman and Taylor were in and tried to report it.

But Grossman, fearing that the offense would violate his probation and land him back in prison, attacked the officer with her own flashlight as she used her radio.

“I’m hit,” Park yelled over the radio.

Grossman called for Taylor to help him subdue the officer. Park managed to draw her .357 Magnum and fire off a wild shot inside her patrol vehicle. Then she kicked Taylor in the groin.

But Grossman, 6 feet 4 and 225 pounds, overpowered the 5-foot-5, 115-pound officer. He broke her fingers wrenching the .357 away from Park and shot her in the back of the head.

The two men escaped but were arrested 11 days later. Grossman was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to death a year to the day of the murder. Taylor was convicted of third-degree murder and served two years of his seven-year sentence.

Park had grown up in Columbus, Ohio, and quickly developed an affinity for the outdoors. She camped with park rangers in Ontario and especially enjoyed the sounds of wolves howling.

She graduated from Ohio State University and came to Florida to become a wildlife officer. She quickly took to the law enforcement side of her new post, though it often required her to patrol alone.

“I decided when I was 12 that I wanted to be a park ranger,” she told the St. Petersburg Times in an interview before her death. “It will never be a job.”

After her service, Park’s ashes were scattered by helicopter over the eagles’ nests she helped care for as a wildlife officer.

In 2007, a stone marker was placed in the Brooker Creek Preserve in East Lake to honor “an officer fallen in the cause of conservation.”

Park’s brother, sister and mother, Peggy, 79, planned to attend the execution. The mother came from Ohio despite a cardiologist’s order not to travel.

we all knew the facts of the case, all we asked for was a chance for a mercy hearing before the 4 member clemency board. we asked for mercy because of the professional opinion regarding his diminished mental capabilities, facts notwithstanding.

Gov crist does not get it. We who were advocating mercy for martin A”H were well aware that he committed a terrible crime 25 years ago. Rather, we were saying that this was a changed man. The Martin who was executed several hours ago was a completely different person from the wild kid of 25 years ago. In his last few minutes, he expressed remorse for his crime, took full responsibility, said the Shma and passed away.
I find extremely arrogant of Gov Crist to assume that we did not know the facts. Even worse, to ignore an appeal from 50,000 people including the Chief Rabbi of Israel. This man should never receive another vote of confidence from any Jew.

    Governer Crist,
Why did you refuse to even MEET with the Rabbis who pettitioned you for clemency? If you would have met with them, and convinced them, we would maybe believe that there are aspects we dont know…
    But you didnt…
Not even for a few minutes.
You are a cruel, despicable person, who put politics above compassion!
I will do everything in my power to make sure you never win another election in your life!

I say this Gov is a killer himself. He has killed five people by now. He’s not God. Down with the death penalty.

And by the way, nobody was asking for Grossman to be released, he could have served a life sentence.

Governors who have the final say should be the ones who have to look the condemned man in the eye, insert the i.v. and inject the lethal drugs. They should also be required to meet with the inmate before making the final decision. Crist took the easy way out.

If Mr. Crist was so sure of his justifications for proceeding with the death warrant, then why was he refusing to speak with or discuss the matter, even for a few moments, with the organizations and politicians, etc etc who asked for his time? If his argument was strong, he had nothing to be afraid of. Obviously he is a coward, with sending the email out half an hour before the execution and speaking out only AFTER the execution. People of Florida and around the nation should expose him for his cowardice and falsity. Let this be his downfall.

If the murderer were a cuban gang member of 18 years old and his victim was a 89 yo holocaust survivor would u and the agudah still be singing the same tune? Why hasn’t agudah petitioned margulis of YTT to have stopped employing a mass murderer of jewish souls the last 30+ years? why instead do they honor margolis at every convention but go so shrill now?

All facts are well known to everyone, no body justified the killing of ms. Park, but hundreds of thousands of people around the globe pleaded with cold hearted Mr Crist to spare his life until further review, and he declined! he refused to wait a few more months to determine whether Grossman was worth a chance of living behind bars for the rest of his life and not have to die today.

I am not saying he was right, but to make it sound that he was blowing her brains out, is ludicrous. Also he makes a big to do of his trying to cover up his crime. What did he expect him to do? I’ve lost all respect for this guy!

Unfortunately Crist refuses to discuss ALL of the facts and that it is not right nor just to KILL a disabled human being for an act that he committed when he was not 100%. It is also unjust to KILL a human being who has remorse, guilt and has shown repentance. There is no JUSTICE in killing or taking a life of another human being, that in itself is playing G-D and no one is on that level.

Now Crist is just as guilty of pre-meditated and purposeful killing. How will HE be judged and what will be HIS punishment. Time will tell.

Did Agudah offer or get involved in the Tropper or yeshiva sex abuse cases? Where is their justice on these issues? I got a cable from Gov. Crist. After reading all the facts he could have taken her gun and thrown it away instead of shooting her. Tied her up and run. He was an ex con on parole with an illegal firearm and decided to use it. Suppose this was the scenario of the guy who beat the rebbe in Lakewood and decided to murder him. After he did teshuvah and repented. Would any of us or Agudah get involved? Gov Crist prays every year at the Western Wall for the safety of Florida and publisisies the miracle that Florida has not had a hurricane in 7 years since he goes every year to pray and states it is solely because of the prayer at the Western Wall Floridas has no hurricanes in 7 years. A rasha mrusha? We should be happy his misa is a cappara for this heinous crime plus his 25 years in prison, that he got all his onesh now.

If it had been a Jewish victim killed by a black man who later sincerely repented, you would have screamed bloody murder if the execution wasn’t carried out, and would have called it anti-Semitism had there been a stay of execution.

Some commenters are just out of their mind. governor is not a murderer. And Martin a”h is not a martyr. However governor is an arrogant politician who totally disregarded pettitions of tens of thousands people. He refused to meet with prominent Jewish Rabbis. If it was Jessy Jackson and Sharpton would he also refuse? There is no problem with capital punishment when it is done right and even in this case it is possible that after granting 60 days stay it would still proceed. Main point after this is not to vote for liberal pro-arab candidates, but to vote for his opponent in the primaries and get him out before the real elections. We as Jews MUST send a message. Should there be next issue we all get energized about that it gets real attention!

He murdered an officer in cold blood because he was afraid to go to jail. Rehabilitation doesn’t absolve one of such a crime.
In the old days of the beis din, would he not be killed just because he showed remorse? Give me a break.

As far as I can tell, these Jewsih organizations are now zero for two, to borrow from the language of baseball.

They have now struck out with Pollard and with Grossman. How many thousands of dollars have been spent on these campaigns where those monies could have better been spent to wipe out Jewish poverty.

These campaigns being run by Madison Ave type Jewish organizations are collosal failures. For years, they have been badgering us with Pollard and now with Grossman. In both instances, these organizations fell flat on their faces. My suggestion to you is to be careful. You may hurt your nose next time.

What the article above fails to mention is that, excuse me, Grossman not only hit her with the flashlight, he smashed her skull and underlying brain over 20-30 times, then delivered the coup-de-grace with a shot to the back of the head into the area of the brain that controls some important things like the heart and breathing. The governor replied to my email request for clemency and that of others as well. In his reply, he clearly was making a s’teera concerning the low IQ, on drugs/alc, tough childhood excuses. He did not accept them any of them. Can you really blame him? The crime was horrible beyond words. There is something wrong with a brain that commits acts like this, IMHO. People should read the criminal complaint and understand just what happened here. And the coverup was something that speaks against an IQ of 70. The psychologist who wrote he was unfit was a DEFENSE psychologist, so keep that in mind. Courts clearly did not buy it. The only reason to ask for clemency was to try to save the life of a member of klal yisrael as gedolay torah requested.

And why did the gedolay torah request it? Because he was repentant. They didn’t get involved in other Jewish murderers who were also members of klal yisrael. You know why? Because they weren’t repentant killers.
