Jacob Dreyfuss, president of Stamford Hill’s Stolin-Karlin synagogue, rebuilt his two-storey home without planning permission, to add a cellar and a loft extension.

Hackney Council issued an enforcement notice and he appealed against it without success.

The government’s Planning Inspectorate has now given him a year to “remove the unauthorised house”.
If he fails to comply with the ruling, he could face criminal prosecution and ultimately a fine.

Last month the Planning Inspectorate heard details of the nine-year row between Mr Dreyfuss and the council over extensions at his home in Lingwood Road, Stamford Hill.

Planning permission had been granted in 2002, but Mr Dreyfuss extensively rebuilt the house, “substantially enlarging” on the plans accepted.

Council officers claimed the roof extensions were an “excessively bulky and obtrusive development” and did not fit with others in the street.

Mr Dreyfuss can now apply for new permission and alter the property to bring it in line with council rules. But he can only challenge the Inspectorate’s decision if he believes an error has been made in law.

Cllr Guy Nicholson, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, said: “Hackney is sending out a clear message. If people choose to ignore these laws, we will take whatever action is necessary to deal with the issue.”

Why do they give him another year to demolish the house. They can get a wrecking crew to do the job in less than a week. Once and for a all, there is a need to send a message to the orthodox ommunity that they cannot continue to ignore the rules and municipal codes. The same types of issues are reported here each week invovling cases in Monsey, New Jersy and other areas in the NYC metropolitan area. The rules apply to ALL and there is no special exemption for yiddin no matter what their proposed excuses are for ignoring the rules.

as much as i feel horrible for this guy he does deserve it. who does he think he is to totally disregard the law? it’d the same way in lakewood. every day people park illegally and then get upset when they get a ticket. if you park in front of a fire hydrant, by the yellow curb by the corner, too close to a stop sign, or in a fire lane you will get a ticket. you must follow the rules just like everyone else. 7th street is not the yeshiva parking lot and a home in stamford hill is not a succah in your backyard.

i feel bad for the guy, but who has the right to go against the council? we want the council to pretect us from anti S, but on the side we want to do what WE want! We live in a world out there! just stick to the rules and avoid any Chillul Hashem!!

I don’t want to see one appeal to collect money for this guy – however holy and frum he might be. If you don’t follow the rules, they will follow you. Everyone’s knows it, and no one’s exempt…

There are always grey lines around any building zoning laws but me thinks the president of SH Stolin-Karlin has bitten off more than he can chew on this one!

To all the “just follow the rules” out there:
What happened to private property concept? The man built on his own land. Built something not designed to bother normal neighbors – a residential house. Private property rights should not be trampled just because someone does not like the architectural style or for some other arbitrary reason.
Besides, Jacob Dreyfuss is our brother whether he is right or wrong – deserving our unified support – not some “follow the rules” criticism.

I wish they had such powerful councils in Williamsburg and Boro Park. Then we would not have seen beautiful brownstones destroyed in the former and junk houses replacing old attractive homes in the latter. Recently, they destroyed an old beautiful shul on 14th Ave., which could have been renovated, for a Hasidishe group to build an ugly building.

Today is Tanis Esther. if we want the Eibishte to accept our Tefilos and fasting, we should stop writing loshon hora.
The judge said that the building was done correctly according to plans. The top flooor needs minor amendments. The judge told the Council to give planning permission on 95% of the house.

he is not hurting any neighbours and gets along with all of them! not one person on the street ever complained about the house! the person built his house almost exactly like he had planning in 2002. The inspector wrote that the council was wrong on almost every single point besides one balcony and a small part of the top floor.Hackney council is trying to make problems for every yid in Stamford Hill who did any building works in the last three years.the inspector wrote that he should reapply and that the council have to give again the planning. the article written in the Jewish Conical is all leis but what would anyone expect from them to when it comes this newspaper to write against a frum yid.

Again the JC is out there fabricating stories against charedim and they will take every opportunity to cause damage to our community! Mr Dreyfuss has only done what is right and has followed all the rules. He applied for planning permission and was granted permission for 97% of what he built, (the 3% extra was just like most of you would have done). The house does not obstruct the view or light for any of the neighbours, even more than that, he received their full support in the form of letters supporting his claim to the council and the council did not receive a single complaint. The courts decision clearly states that the court does not require him to demolish the house at all, and have no intention to enforce anything of the sort, all they want is a few minor changes which they have given him a year to negotiate with the council and he is on good terms with them and b”h it looks very positive even on the few minor changes. Anyone can see the decision online on the councils website, and see for themselves that what i am saying is true, rather than beleiving this disgusting anti charedi newspaper.

As a next door neighbour I would like to raise my points.
1)This house has been build with full planning permission, (besides some minor amendments) which are common in the all London area.
2)no neighbour here agents it at any time.
3)And B”h he did win 99 percent of the case.
4)Final point, this is not a news to share and publicise as it’s a private issue.
5)A freilichen purim to the whole world

I can’t believe the responses of so many heimisher people – first of all, every single newspaper article is written with a lot of inaccurate details, anyone that ever had an article written about them both negative or positive can attest to that – so to take an article written in a biased “news” source and judge a person that is involved in almost every chesed project in London and is extremely active in various Torah and Chesed projects in EY – supported tens of yungerliet by letting them work by him and learn the ropes of his own business knowing that they will enter the same field once they are established, is totally ridiculous.

Second, as a local, I happen to know that the Judge did not rule on a demolish order – not even close, they are talking about 2 illegal balconies and a few meters on the top floor, it is so wrong to give the impression that he was breaking the law or the like.

I am reading this article and the comments and don’t know whether to laugh or cry!

I would laugh because the original article is so entirely inaccurate and people believe things so easily, and I would cry for all the bitter people out there who are so quick to condemn their fellow Jew (or any human being) without knowing the facts.

Regardless of Mr Dreyfus’s alleged contravention of planning permission, who gives people the right to comment without knowing the full details of the story? This is one man’s private issue with the local council which a rabidly anti-orthodox rag of a paper is thrilled to pounce upon to fill their columns, all you people out there have no clue about planning regulations and I truly believe this is nobody’s business, besides for the few of us local neighbours who may be neagtively affected by this decision.

Living within two blocks of his lovely house, I know that in the future I may have issues with the council when I would like to make my house big enough for my family. The houses in this area were built in around 1930 and are not big enough for our growing families and the council are extremely strict with regard to planning. Mr Dreyfuss may have made a mistake by not sticking to the permissions 100% but he is not the first and not the last in all aread of London.

I only wish every single person writing these negative comments is so honest and sticks to evry law of the land…
Thw world would truly be a better place if everyone were as correct as their self-righteous comments make them appear.

In these days, we need to be saving our negative comments for the real criminals…

Our house is currently under construction. All the government things are always written up exaggerated. We got two stop orders. The first one was for having no plans on site. In fact, the workers were done for the day, and a COPY (not the original) was on site. The second one was for not having a wooden fence surrounding the site. One plank had been blown down by the wind

Hi i want to make a few points regarding this storry 1) It is a shame on us jews that we have a so called jewish newspaper that calls it self jewish cronicle everything that is frum/charedi they make sure to twist and turn so we heimishe get a bad reputation shame on u JC and shame on u here who commented against one of the biggest baalei tzeduka in town 2)When it comes to jews Hackney council makes sure to take action against them how can a fam of 5-6 or more kids live in a 3 bedroom house and when they want to extend they get refused so how do u want us to live normal 3) I wonder why all the comments against rabbi dreyfuss are from americans and not from londoners that says it all we ALL support this great guy 4)And last but not least he dim NOT do anything wrong as the judge said it the verdict he has the support of the judge of all his neighbours all of stamford hill just because the JC decided that he went against the law dosent mean he did because he didnt do anything against the law so again SHAME ON U THE JC AND ALL ON HERE who Wrote against him from one of many many who support u rabbi dreyfuss Chazak v’emotz

As a great friend of R’ Yankel for many years i can testify that the whole planning issue is well blown out of proportion, he did everything according to the planning dated 2002 other than a larger balcony and slightly larger loft only in the back of the house, to which he had consent from every neighbour. SHAME ON YOU PEOPLE to criticize this YID for such a minor planning violation which NO ONE WAS EVEN AFFECTED BY IT. now is a time of EYIN TOVA and we should all only see good in our fellow jews eyes, not the opposite. On a personal note I wish there would be more people like R’ Yankel who is someone that cares about other to the highest level.

The facts are the Inspector said most of the councils concerns are unforunded!

This house is a beacin of light to the world jewery, it is the evil powers of haman and amalek that are against it, but this month of ADAR is the right month to fight haman and amalek.

All of you out there, you look like a bunch of fools, as you dont know anything at all about what your writing.

The JC is going downhill and their last chnace is to fabricate hatred towards Charedim who are these that preserve…judaisim, no JC it will not work, charedim will stay forever…

Chareidi kehilla is growing and JC readership is dying. They are already handing out free copies and even thats not helping so their last desperate attempt at survival is…..? you guessed it: turn up the chareidi bashing. Unfortunately for them that will ultimately only add an extra nail in their coffin as their few remaining loyal readers feel betrayed as they cotton onto the fact their quality of accurate reporting is disappearing too! Hamodia readership is on the up as the wider community defects to this quality and informative production. You chevra in the USA who choose to jump on the bandwagon; watch out or you’ll go the same way as the JC

BTW, not all USA imports are sour. Some are actually great. YANKI DREYFUSS IS PROOF OF THAT. Yankel: we’re all behind you!!!!

It seems its only the council who have decided to single out a scapegoat here, no neighbours, just some guy in an office who decides what he would like on a street he has hardly ever been to. There are thousands of houses around the town which look preposterous and yet no one says a word, but when a family man in S Hill goes a meter to high or wide, there’s a hue and cry, put things in perspective.
