He is now holding a number of events statewide for people to claim their share. “New York has $9.9 billion in unclaimed fund accounts,” said comptroller Thomas DiNapoli. “We want to return this money to its rightful owners.”

According to the state’s Web site, banks, insurance agencies, utilities, investment companies, and other businesses are required by state law to surrender inactive accounts to the state where the state comptroller then serves as custodian of the money until you claim it.

DiNapoli is encouraging New Yorkers to see if they own any part of the $9.9 billion by going to the state’s web site, www.osc.state.ny.us or by calling toll free at 1-800-221-9311.

I don’t think this is fair
I had a stock account with money in many shares and since I didn’t do a transaction in 2-3 years its now by the state
    Why?
Why do I have to go deal with this now?
