Washington – Is Obama Moving To Topple Israel’s Prime Minister?

    47

Washington – The administration of President Barack Obama has launched what officials termed a psychological warfare campaign meant to topple Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu.

Sources in the Obama Administration and the US Congress have confirmed to the Middle East Newsline that the White House and State Department have sought to destabilize Netanyahu’s government by forcing him to agree to an indefinite freeze on Jewish construction in areas taken by Israel in the wake of the 1967 war as well as the establishment of a Palestinian state by 2012. They said the campaign sought to replace Netanyahu with opposition leader and former foreign minister Tsipi Livni.

“Bibi is extremely vulnerable to pressure,” a source familiar with the White House effort said. “We know this from his first term in office and believe he will collapse this time as well.”

The sources said the administration’s strategy aimed to delegitimize Netanyahu in his government and right-wing constituency. They said Obama and his aides have sought to portray Netanyahu as a weak and unstable politician  who will destroy relations with Washington as Israel seeks U.S. support for a military option against Iran.

“There seems to be a general belief in the circle around the president that the democratically-elected government in Israel is drunk at the wheel,” Steven Rosen, a veteran pro-Israeli lobbyist now with the Middle East Forum, said. “They clearly will use pressure tactics to bring Israel around.”

In April 2010, former U.S. ambassador to Israel, Martin Indyk, began a series of attacks on Netanyahu in the Israeli media. Indyk, a former assistant secretary of state under then-President Bill Clinton, has called

for the toppling of Netanyahu while his right-wing partners accept a more pliant prime minister.

“Indyk was sent by Obama and encouraged by his American Jewish supporters, particularly [former Rep.] Robert Wexler, to do this,” the source said.

In January 2010, Wexler resigned from Congress to become head of the Center for Middle East Peace and Economic Cooperation. The center was founded by Obama supporter Daniel Abraham and a delegation met Netanyahu in February.

The sources said the administration’s campaign has included invitations to Defense Minister Ehud Barak to the White House, where he met with Obama on April 26. Barak has been regarded as the most pro-U.S. minister in Netanyahu’s Cabinet and has been lobbying ministers to accept Obama’s proposals.

“It’s not going to be easy to turn this thing around,” Rosen told a briefing on April 21. “Some of my friends in Jerusalem believe this crisis will go on for an extended period.”

The anti-Netanyahu has alarmed pro-Israeli members in Congress, particularly from the Democratic Party. Several of the Democrats have reported a sharp drop in funds by Jewish donors for congressional elections in November.

“This [campaign against Netanyahu] is counterproductive and has to stop,” Sen. Charles Schumer, a New York Democrat who has threatened to issue a condemnation of the White House, said.

Some in the pro-Israeli community detect an anti-Semitic tinge to the White House campaign, despite the involvement of Jewish aides. On April 21, National Security Advisor James Jones stunned an audience at the pro-Israel Washington Institute when he told a joke of a Jewish merchant who tricked a thirsty Taliban fighter into buying a tie.

“I wish that I had not made this off the cuff joke at the top of my remarks,” Jones later said. “I apologize to anyone who was offended by it. It also distracted from the larger message I carried that day: That the United States’ commitment to Israel’s security is sacrosanct.”

Former State Department official Aaron Miller said Obama has surrounded himself with aides who blame Netanyahu for the suspension of the Arab-Israeli peace process. Miller said many of the aides had encountered Netanyahu during his first tenure as prime minister from 1996 to 1999.

“They had seen the Benjamin Netanyahu movie before and were determined not to let their chance at Middle East peace end the same way,” Miller said in the magazine Foreign Policy. “Confronted with Netanyahu again, Obama and his team needed no encouragement to talk tough on the growing Israeli

Settlements in the West Bank, an issue that experts inside and outside government were clamoring for Obama to raise as the first step in his renewed push for peace. Fresh from his victory on health care, he’s [Obama] king of the world again and in no mood to let the king of Israel frustrate his plans.”

I very much doubt the U.S. has any thoughts about replacing Netanyahu since the next government might even be more antagonistic to a long-term peace settlement. While there is legitimate disagreement between Obama and some in the governing coalition in EY, they have the same objective of acheiving a just and secure peace.

Bill Clinton and the first President Bush both interfered in Israeli politics. Stop trying to make it seem like Obama is some kind of rasha on the level of a Hitler or an Ahmadinejad. The historical ignorance shown by some of the comments here is staggering. And the Philadelphia Bulletin is not exactly a respected news source.

Every time he pressures Israel, Obama gets new problems.
Besides the oil spill, the National Enquirer is investigating him for a John Edwards type of story. There are blogs which report that even worse stuff than the Enquirer is looking into, exists.
If only a fraction of this is true, he will make Tiger Woods look good.

Hashem laughs at this and so do I.
If it is time for Tzipi Livni to rule, she will rule. If it is time for Netanyahu to rule, he will rule. Barack Obama cannot change this, no matter how hard he tries. However, the harder he tries the more Hashem will try to punish him ‘middah k’neged middah’.

The harder he is on Israel, the more the US is getting punished. Just look at the oil spill and the almost bomb that hit NY, but his hatred to yidden is so strong that it will be his downfall.

No one can topple Natanyahu’s government but the Israeli citizen voters. If Israeli voters find that their prime minister is incompetent, then they have the power to make changes. Obama sending diplomats to do “psychological warfare” against Natanyahu can only work on VIN readers.

have just received this: from my friend in Israel , who moves in high circles in Israel
we heard it from a consultant to the United States who meets once a month with the President in the White house. He is in the know. This is what actually has happened with the relationship with Israel and the USA and it is not pretty:

    1. Israel during the Bush and Clinton Administrations – had landing rights in Turkey , and in the USA bases in the middle east and more recently under George Bush, in Iraq . This was in case they were invaded by Iran , or Saudi or any other Arab country. Obama has withdrawn those landing rights. Israel now has nowhere to refuel in the middle east.
    2. Netanyahu was instructed to come to the white house for a meeting. He was brought in through a servants entrance – the only head of state ever in US history to be given that disgraceful treatment. He was not offered even a cup of tea – but was lectured to by Obama who told him that he is not permitted to attack Iran and that he has to withdraw all forces from the West bank and may not build any more settlements ( neighborhoods) in East Jerusalem.

Its time to get rid of Obama from US policy.

I will reserve judgment at this point. There is a most obvious logical flaw in this sensational claim – one can hardly believe that if the US was breaking international conventions by attempting to influence domestic policy in an allied country, they would not very likely admit to it openly.

Let’s see what the reaction of the Netanyahu government will be to such claim, before accepting it on face value.

We should let him know american jews won’t stand for such behavior of a american president. We must potest and give bibi praise and show him that he is not alone

Another small point off topic — Israel warned the U.S. a long time ago NOT to go into Iraq, Sharon warned Bush, told him what the Intell. said, but Bush went in instead, we had the Iraq war at what kind of cost?? Maybe Obama only wants Israeli intell??? At what cost?????????? At the cost of whose life????

Another sourceless story with no facts, and as usual the most ignorant among us swarm around it like flies on manure.

Why do we accept stories like this from suspect “journalists” who provide no facts or sources, just a string of opinions intertwined with other opinions. OPINION is not fact.

Not labeling this piece an editorial is both dishonest and embarrassing.

Even though I as a Satmar’er believe that the State of Israel is against the torah, but in this US-Israeli fight I have to side with Bibi and against Osama Obama. This grandson of “Chum ben Noach” believes he’s king and can dictate everyone, and just for show he has surrounded himself with a bunch of yes man including so called jews. This paper tiger shows his toughness only against friends & allies, but when it comes to his muslim brothers who are the real threat he tries to play nice. What a disgrace.

All your ranting won’t matter one bit because bottom line is, it’s the Jews who are stupid. It’s the Jews who continue to support Obama and will get him elected again. And it’s the Jews who will support the clafte Clinton and will get her elected again. We are our own worst enemy and they know it.
