The interactive map billed as the nation’s first statewide cancer map, to be posted on the Internet Monday shows specific types of cancer and certain environmental features, such as landfills. The intent is to better understand the causes of cancer.

Assemblyman Richard Brodsky, a Westchester Democrat, and Gov. David Paterson’s administrations caution against making immediate conclusions because of the many critical factors not included, among them whether a cancer patient smoked.

The data is from the 2000 Census. It doesn’t identify any individuals because the map shows only combined information from small geographic areas.

The state departments of Health and Environmental Conservation have worked on the cancer mapping project.

There once was a theory that Long Island and Rockland had the highest rates of breast cancer due to 2 major components. 1. Pesticides were once used as these were farm lands and 2. Many of the residents were from eastern European decent. This map however does NOT back up this theory.

I didn’t know that the 2000 Census asked if someone had cancer.

It’s so hard to comment and have an adult dialogue with comments like #2 . Please open the PDF and look at the maps, click on breast cancer and then look at number 1”s informative comment.
