Brooklyn, NY – It’s Erev Shavuos in New York City. But at City Hall it’s another day in the budget battle. That’s where we found Councilman David Greenfield today. We have video shot only minutes ago of Greenfield in a heated exchange with NYC ACS Commissioner John Mattingly on the proposed elimination of day care centers and Priority 7 vouchers. These vouchers provide day care for 2178 children in low-income families (ex: families of four making less than $22,000 a year) in New York City.

Councilman Greenfield slammed ACS for their proposal to to eliminate Priority 7 vouchers. Councilman Greenfield demanded to know what these children will do next year when these cuts are implemented. The Commissioner had no response and sat there stunned.

The children will do the same thing as the other 8,000,000 people in this city do without these vouchers. They will go on living.
The commissioner was very smart not to respond to Mr. Greenfield’s bullying. Mr. Greenfield doesn’t seem to undersatand that we the taxpayers ran out of money for more programs. There is no more money, Mr. Greenfield. What would you like the commissoner to do? I, the taxpayer am fed up with people that refuse to get an education and attempt to earn a decent living, then have the gall to DEMAND that we taxpayer’s support all of their government programs. Get an education, get a job, and if you still can’t make it then we’ll help you. But for now, look to the UN for money – teh amercan taxpayer doesn’t have any left..
What will happen next year? Finally heimishe parents will pay tuition for their children’s schooling, and the fraud and theft and lying and spiritual death that it brought will end. People wake up!!! It’s time to stop stealing. It’s time to start living according to the Torah!!!

Many responders to this post seem to think that the recipients of the vouchers are people who are not educated, hardworking or responsible. I hope you dont take the same attitude when approached for Tzedakah or Hhacnasas Kallah etc.
The unfortunate truth is that many of the recipients are hard working people with large families who need the vouchers for after school care so that they can work.
The budget issue is that of priorities. The city will spend billions of dollars on entitlement programs. The question is “who gets the funding” — and the answer is — the constituency with the best advocate and the most influential representative. Kudos to David,

Response two #3/4, ACS is shelling out billions for every Metzorah, every homeless thug or drug addict or alcohol addicts get whatever they need, they get shelters that look like 5 star hotels (I saw them, ) so u are just self haters,thery is plenty of money to go around in ACS and the other city agencies that cater to every Meshiganer and homless in the city, you self haters are concerned about the 4/5 million that our poor yidden have some benefit from??? You should shame yourself, just review a little of the city’s budhet and see how many billions gets wasted on evry drunkard, and then maybe you will get some shechel in you head. I think that they should close the public schools which cost an estimated $15,000 per child and give everyone vouchers to go to private schools and the city will save much more money – the cost of a child in a private school is much cheaper because it is privately run and they whatch every penny (just my thought)

Can someone explain something to me?
These vouchers provide day care for 2178 children in low-income families (ex: families of four making less than $22,000 a year) in New York City.
So let’s say (for simplicity sake) each parent makes $11,000 a year. Why is it worth it to give them two vouchers at $7,000 each?
(I’m not against it I just think I’m missing something.)
The issue isn’t the vouchers here
The issue is the way of getting them

But seems for david greenfeld the most important part is the press releaseses regardless of the consequences
I for one am happy to see that Greenfield is independent and stands up for the community. As for the so called “askanim,” they made a deal last year that only extended this program by six months. Now that deal is over. So much for those “deals” by the “askanim.”
