Dix Hills, NY – During Jeffrey Spiegel’s funeral, Rabbi Marc Gellman picked up a battered Machzor. “It is broken and etched with tire marks,” he said sadly.
The machzor, a prayer book for the recent Jewish holidays, was lying next to Spiegel’s car early Saturday morning. It was the first identification police found of the 17 year-old senior from Half Hollow Hills High School West, who died when he lost control of his car and hit a tree off the Long Island Expressway north service road in Dix Hills.

At the funeral, held at Gutterman’s Memorial Chapel in Woodbury, about 700 mourners celebrated Spiegel’s quiet compassion, his determination to succeed, and his dedication to his school and friends.
Burial was in New Montefiore Cemetery in Pinelawn.

Of course it’s best not to drive on shabbos. But it’s fairly stupid/insensitive to insinuate that this is why the person was killed. How about frum yidden that are killed as pedestrians on Shabbos walking to shul? Or killed in a fire from Chanukah licht? Or ?
At least he was driving to/from shul. That’s a zchus I would want to take with me.
Maybe it’s best not to drive on Shabbos
