Harris, NY – Catskill Regional Begins Building New ER

Harris, NY – Catskill Regional Medical Center is about to start construction on an expansion of the Harris campus emergency room that hospital officials say will allow it to treat more patients more quickly.

The expansion will increase the emergency room’s space to 17,500 square feet from 7,500, and will increase the bays to 16 from nine, including a pediatric bay and four new fast-track bays for minor injuries.

CEO Steve Ruwoldt said the ER has been over capacity for years. “It was originally built to hold a maximum of 18,000 people a year, and we’re seeing 26,000 on an annual basis. During very busy times, it gets extremely overcrowded in the emergency room.”

Half of the $5.5 million needed for the expansion came from local philanthropist Alan Gerry, who offered to match state funding for the project. The rest came from state grants.

Construction is expected to be finished in 12 to 18 months.

Besides expanding its emergency room, the hospital is also developing a new set of processes that will help it treat patients much more quickly, Ruwoldt said.

Instead of doing a full triage when a patient comes in the door, patients will now be triaged briefly, then moved right into a bay, where they can be seen by a doctor. The full triage and registration will be completed at the bedside.

Once patients have been tested, they will be moved to another area to wait for results, freeing up emergency beds for other patients.

“It’s going to enable people to be seen quicker,” Ruwoldt said, “so that will translate into shorter visits.”

Dr Tayun was booted from IZ becasue of the lousy bum who took over the ER. It was not a medical decision but a political one.

He’s a great doctor and one who went beyond the call of duty to help patients, Goyim and Yidden alike,

I’m proud to be part of an org that appreciates the doctors who treat us well. Hatzolah helped Dr. Tayun get the job and let’s hope we get to use him for Simchos only,

As a camp medical director and one that goes there with patients many times during summer, I must say that the problem with Harris hospital is not room or more space, it’s just a lousy system, I have long said that the only thing there resembling a city hospital, is the wait time to be seen and taken care of, and someone to tell them the news that it takes much quicker in the city already, hopefully the New doctor will make a difference because more space won’t.

How dare you speak against Maimonides. My uncle went there with stomach problems and he left with a stent and balloon and he feels just great. The service was excellent and the doctors very accomodating.

maybe sullivan county can pave eh street on broadway in monticello before the summer starts.
if an ambulance has to drive over those streets they will be lucky to keep their tires.
the town has become a disgrace.
