New York, NY – The Weird World of Unions’ Paid Leave Perks

    22

New York, NY – Now that we know bus drivers can get up to two months of paid sick time after suffering the “assault” of being spit upon, what other perks have slipped into the city’s union contracts? The Post dug up some strange rules about everything from overtime to classroom assignments, some of which rival the absurdity of the MTA’s spitting policy.

For instance, unionized workers are guaranteed “special excusals” for things like “Moon Landing Observation Day.” Firefighters are guaranteed 96 hours of overtime a year. Transit workers get to celebrate their birthdays as paid holidays.

Also, all those reckless bus drivers may be driving that way on purpose, because drivers who receive traffic summonses on the job get four hours pay if they appear in court and are exonerated.

Many contracts also guarantee pay increases for longevity, and mortuary technicians even get an extra $636 a year to deal with rabid animals.

The “spit-leave” falls under the category of assault, and bus, train and subway operators are entitled to two years off for “injuries incurred on duty as a result of physical assaults.” The contract doesn’t define assault, and doesn’t mention spitting anywhere.

this is why we all hate and resent them. our tax dollars our thrown out the window. I hope they do a study of how many go on “disability” a few years into it and sit on their porches and do nothing all day.

I read a lot of these exemptions and perks in the newspaper today. I actually don’t have a problem with many of them. For example, if anyone is so loose with his life as to go into burning buildings, I don’t have a problem with him having 96 hours PER YEAR of overtime. And there’s other stuff like that too.

As others have stated before me elsewhere, unions are the last great bastion of socialism in the United States. or at least they were until the white house became one.

I fail to see how this is “weird” I think a better terminology would be “stealing” ot “thief” this is a public utility and the tax payers and strap hangers are picking up the tab!!!! Its time they privatize the public transportation.

Now we know why they are stopping the 16 Ave bus line in Brooklyn They need the money to pay for these unnecessary perks.

$40 an hour for driving a bus? What special skills are needed for such a job? I am sure they get benefits too…..

There is a way for bus drivers to play the system and get tons of overtime for sitting around at the end of each run (not shift – a run is when they have to turn around and go back – they get break time then) and doing NOTHING!! It is the first thing a new dirver learns on the job from his colleagues.
It is about time that ALL government workers finally got what is coming to them. NONE of them ever work like a private person has to work in a business. Many years ago, I had a summer job at a gov’t agency. At 4:40, everyone lined up at the time clock to make sure they punched out at exactly 5:00. G-d forbid you were the one who got “stuck” at 5:01 – there must be something wrong with you.
Now I work for myself and 14 -18 hour days are not unusual – and no time clock to punch.

When you work for a private company, your employer appreciates the extra effort you put in, not so in government! No 1 knows your name till you mess up. So why should i make the extra effort, for an unappreciative boss and an unappreciative public ( for when i do go the extra mile) those of us that deal with the public as government employees don’t have it as easy as you think
