    4

Orange County, NY – The U.S. Census Bureau has tagged the county as having the second highest percentage of workers in the country who commute more than 90 minutes to their jobs. Only Richmond County – Staten Island – has more, 11.8 percent to Orange County’s 10 percent, in the census. The majority of these so-called extreme commuters work in New York City and clock the door-to-door trip at two hours.

The number of U.S. workers commuting at least an hour to work by car has increased by 50 percent since 1990, New Yorkers (those living near New York City) have some of the longest car commuting times in the country. New Yorkers dominate the “extreme commuter” category, that is, traveling more than 90 minutes one way to work.
According to the TRB, 5 percent of all New Yorkers travel more than 90 minutes to get to work. At least 10 percent of all New Yorkers spend at least an hour commuting, according to the data.
Washington and Baltimore have the next longest average commute times, but pale when compared to the Empire State or, as the TRB data summary put it: “The entire nation’s data is affected by New York.”

On average, New Yorkers spend nearly two weeks in their cars every year commuting.
Overall, Americans are spending an average of 25.5 minutes in their cars one way, up from 21.7 minutes in 1980, according to the TRB.

9:53 Although I’m from Brooklyn, the last time I was in Monsey it was still in Rockland County. A lot has gone on there recently, so maybe it has moved?

I was this close to moving to Monsey,

Now I have to re-think it. I work in the City.
