    NY Times:

A personal employee of Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg was assaulted today in Hackensack, N.J., by two thieves who forced him out of a Lexus owned by the mayor and later dumped the car about seven miles away, according to the authorities.

The employee, Gradimir Bosnjak, 62, was on an errand to pick up a colleague when the assault and carjacking occurred, around 8:43 a.m., the police said. The mayor, whose public schedule today included an announcement at the Brooklyn Public Library in the morning and a Mets playoff game at Shea Stadium tonight, was not involved in the incident.

Mr. Bosnjak, who lives in Astoria, Queens, is one of several personal assistants to Mr. Bloomberg, who lives in a town house on the Upper East Side and uses Gracie Mansion, the mayoral residence, only for ceremonial purposes. New York City employees, including the mayor’s police detail, handle his travel on official business, but the mayor personally owns nine cars, including three Lexuses, according to state records.

The crime occurred in a leafy, quiet residential section of northern Hackensack, a commuter suburb of New York City and the seat of Bergen County, and startled residents, one of whom called the police immediately after it happened. Several people witnessed the beating and carjacking and described the suspects, a man and a woman in their 20’s, to the police.

Mr. Bosnjack had parked the car, a 2001 Lexus, on Willow Avenue, near Herman Street, when the woman approached the driver’s side. Mr. Bosnjack had rolled down the window.

“She asked for money — $5 for bus fare — and he says, ‘I don’t have any,’ ” said Capt. Frank Lomia, the commander of the detective bureau at the Hackensack Police Department. “He rolls up the window. The second suspect jumps into the front seat, yells at him and says, ‘What did you do to her?’ He punches him in the face, then the first suspect reaches into the window that’s still open and starts grabbing and pulling at him.”

Mr. Bosnjack fought back, and he told the police that he punched the man in the face and ribs, Captain Lomia said. But the couple managed to force Mr. Bosnjack out of the vehicle, and the man climbed into the driver’s seat while the woman raced around to the other side and entered in the car.

They then sped off, at one point making a sharp turn and running over the front lawn of a house.

The car was found around 11 a.m. near 3909 Broadway, an extension of Route 4, in Fair Lawn, about seven miles to the west of Hackensack. The vehicle had dirt and grass on the front bumper but was otherwise undamaged, Captain Lomia said.

Mr. Bosnjack, who was not himself robbed, declined medical treatment and was taken to police headquarters, where he was interviewed, Captain Lomia said.

“He seemed like a very nice gentleman,” Captain Lomia said. “I would say he’s a tough guy. He fought off his attackers. He was able to strike back at the male — he hit him back in the face a couple of times and was able to hit him in the ribs. He fought them off bravely — not something I would recommend to people.”

While at the station, Mr. Bosnjack received a telephone call from Mayor Bloomberg, who asked what happened and expressed sympathy, according to the mayor’s press secretary, Stu Loeser.

The car was examined by the Bergen County sheriff’s office and then released to Mr. Bosnjack, who had a second set of keys on him. Mr. Bosnjack left the station around 4 p.m.

“The mayor appreciates the Hackensack Police Department’s hard work and hopes that those who committed this crime are swiftly brought to justice.” Mr. Loeser said.

The woman was described as being 5 feet 7 inches tall, with a thin build, a nose ring and a light-blue wind breaker. The man was described as being 5 feet 8 inches tall, with a thin build and a black cap.

“They got the vehicle and they did go somewhere,” Captain Lomia said. “Was that their whole motivation? It sure looks that way.”

In New Jersey, he said, the sentencing guidelines call for 10 to 20 years in prison, with a mandatory minimum of five years and a fine of up to $200,000.

“He was clearly trying to hold on to that vehicle and trying to protect himself,” Captain Lomia said. “He did a valiant job. He was a wonderful witness here, very cooperative.”

Bloomberg’s Car Stolen, Aide Beaten By Thieves
(AP) NEW YORK A personal employee of Mayor Michael Bloomberg was beaten by thieves who then carjacked the billionaire’s car Wednesday morning in New Jersey, authorities said.

The employee was driving the 2001 Lexus in Hackensack, N.J., on an errand for the mayor shortly before 9 a.m. when he was approached by a woman who came to the window to ask for money, police said. As he declined and began to roll up the window, a man got into the passenger seat and punched him in the face.

“They force him out and take off,” said Hackensack police Capt. Frank Lomia.

The car was found about two hours later, abandoned on the side of the road in Fairlawn, N.J. Police were looking for the two suspects.

Bloomberg’s employee was not seriously injured and his name was not released. He is one of many staffers who take care of Bloomberg’s personal business and his homes, including his townhouse in Manhattan and country house in upstate New York.

He wasnt the mayor’s “driver”. He was one of the mayor’s staffers who takes care of the mayor’s personal business. This should answer the second comment as well.
