Harlem, NY – Embattled Rep. Charles Rangel vowed on Sunday to stick around.

“This is no time to retire. It’s time to help our President,” said Rangel – though President Obama recently suggested Rangel should bow out.
Rangel, caught in an ethics scandal that threatens to end his 20-term career,told a Harlem crowd he’s fighting for his survival in Congress at a time when minority-group pols are being undermined. “A lot of people say, ‘Hey, there is a bus. Let’s throw him under it,'” he said.
Rangel said his predecessor, Adam Clayton Powell Jr., worked hard to get him into the inner rooms of Washington power.
“Now they are saying they don’t want you at the meeting,” Rangel said. “I don’t think you should feel comfortable if none of us is at the meeting,” Rangel said to cheers at an event held to promote the city’s new voting machines.
Last week, Rangel shot back after Obama suggested he retire rather than face a messy ethics trial. “Frankly, he has not been around long enough to determine what my dignity is,” Rangel said of Obama. “For the next two years, I will be more likely to protect his dignity.”
Of course Obama needs Rangel. He needs him to deflect attention away from himself.
