Garden City, NY – Police say a man who crashed a truck into a utility pole and opened fire on a New York ambulance crew appeared to be on his way to carry out a mass killing.

The Nassau County police commissioner says the 31-year-old man had strapped an assault rifle to his chest and extra ammunition to his forearms with wristbands.
He had six weapons in all, including an automatic pistol behind the seat of his truck.
Shooting erupted at about 10 p.m. Tuesday in Bellmore on Long Island after the man hit a utility pole with his car. When the ambulance crew arrived, he fired at least eight shots, wounding one of them. Police fatally shot the man at the scene when he threatened them.
Police have not released the man’s identity, but they believe he recently moved from Florida. It wasn’t clear whom he may have been targeting.
Fatally shot, and did not negotiate? Sarcasm intended, have we deteriorated to where we are this brutal, taking the life from a terrorist who has not yet been tried and convicted? And the death penalty is also cruel and unusual punishment.
We should be doing this with all violent crime. Waste ’em and bury ’em. I am personally grateful to the officer who fired the fatal shot for eliminating this idiot whose incarceration and trial would have cost me, the taxpayer, millions.
I am very happy that Bellmore volunteer firefighter Justin Angell will be ok and that this lunatic was sent to his final reward. The Nassau County Police deserve the highest praise for stopping this man with deadly force. I am in total agreement with poster #1 . We must all learn to be appreciative of the volunteer fire fighters in suburban communities who risk their lives (unpaid) for their communities. Don’t think for a moment that the firemen in rural or suburban areas are not our own ….in many LI towns and elsewhere Jewish men and sometimes women serve bravely.

One of the first things all EMT’s and First Responders are taught is “scene safety”. You will pretty much get an automatic fail if you do not start every test scenario you are given in order to get your license by looking around and saying “scene safety”. We are all taught to wait for the police BEFORE entering a scene – even when it might look like someone needs immediate help. I guess nothing looked threatening here. This needs to be a lesson for all first responders.
I am so glad the young man will be OK – this could’ve turned out a lot worse for him. And yes, there are plenty of our own in these services (especially in Monsey & 5T). This proves once again that the simplest most routine call can very qucikly turn deadly for those responding. Please be careful out there.
